Methotrexate side effects | Arthritis Information

Hi all.....  have a couple questions about MTX.   I have noticed that many of you have bad side effect from MTX.   I have been on it over a year and didn't think I had any effects from it, but am now wondering.... I usually take it on Wednesdays, 8 pills..  then every Thursday is my 'realtor tour day'  ( I am a realtor if you haven't already guessed!) and we look at atleast 20 homes... up and down, up and down... so, by the time its noon, I'm so ready to collapse and lay down.  But I have also noticed that I am very moody on Thursdays... kinda depressed, short tempered, not tollerant, etc....  and just wondered if it is the meds?  Maybe I should take on Tuesdays instead, but is this a side effect from the MTX?   Moodiness??   A lot of people have a LOT of side effects from MTX. I don't seem to have any. None. Zip. There are times when I'm moody, but not from the medicine. It's possible you are having some side effects. But it's also possible you're just wearing yourself out from all that climbing and walking. It might make you tired & moody, even if you didn't have RA & weren't on MTX. Wish there were an easy answer. Try changing days & see what happens (do it slowly - don't just jump 2 days in one week).

I'm like Fiona...no side effects at all.

Good advice from Fiona...try a different day and see what happens.

I take mine on Saturday night. I sleep through a good bit of it I think; and then if I'm having a hard time the next day I can veg all day if I want. I've noticed on the occation I'm off schedule and take it on a work day I'm really tired and want to go home ALL day.

Everytime I have an increase or I'm off my meds for an extended period of time and restart; I experience worse symptoms. All in all though a little fatigue and moodiness is nothing compaired to the folks that have really bad side effects from it. I consider myself lucky.

Thanks for the advice.  Maybe I will try a different day and instead of taking it in the morning, I'll try the night doses.  Yes, I am lucky with side effects... nothing like others..so what am I complaining about????  And, since every Thursday is so taxing on me with the ups and downs, ins and outs of looking at property, I'm probably moody because my body aches after touring all the new listings!     Aren't there other serious possible side effects? I remember them wanting to put me on it when I was 4, and my mom FREAKED out and they didn't end up doing it. That's when they went the slightly illegal route of liquid ibu. Heh. But I'm sure my mother would have paniced for a good reason? Or is it a pretty mild drug???

There are lots of worse side effects....and although it's been around a long time I wouldn't consider it one of the milder drugs. I certainly wouldn't put my 4 year old on it.

And Vicki~We've all got complaints; big or small their all valid and certainly welcome here. Definately try another day. See how that works for you.

Good Luck.

I tried methotrexate for about 6 months and had to discontinue it.  I was having trouble with my memory and my left side was weak.  My doc took me off of it right away.  All of these symptoms cleared up as soon as I quit using the methotrexate.  I quess everyone reacts to drugs in their own way.

Katie, you are right, there are possible serious side affects which is why regular blood tests are taken (every 8 weeks for me here in the UK) to test liver function. The fact that methatrexate is used in very high doses to treat some cancers might have rung alarm bells with your mum maybe? It is not a mild drug, my GP will not repeat my script until she has had up to date blood results from the RA doc.

I'm on a "minute" dose of 7.5 mg and I often get heart burn (I try a mint before anything 'medical', it usually does the trick) I also get a sore on the end of my tongue for a few days for which I recently resorted to some drastic paste - it 'ade 'e 'alk 'ike 'at for a short while but, interestingly I haven't had a sore for about three weeks - touch wood!

As far as mood swings go.......I'm a stroppy bird anyway, but it's good to have something to blame when needs be

All drugs affect different people in different ways. The important thing is to tell your doctor if you have any side affects, especially anything serious, or anything that greatly interferes with your daily routine. That way, your doctor can maybe adjust your dose, or take you off the meds all together and try something different. But if you don't communicate these concerns with your doctor, then he can't help you. Most doctors are pretty smart, but they're not mind-readers. They can't help you out if they don't know you are having a problem.

So communicate, communicate, communicate!

Take care,

Jesse
