can’t take methotrexate, what R options? | Arthritis Information

I've had a very hard time with methotrexate and only really took it for 3 weeks. It made me feel very nauseous and lowered my white blood count, resulting in being sick constantly (sore throat, chest colds, etc). I see my rheumy next week and wonder what else there is to try. Anyone know other drugs? I have already done plaquenil, which was not aggressive enough for my RA. Thanks for any input. Love and gentle hugs, JuliahArava is one of the other "MTX-like" drugs that is often used in place of or even with MTX.  Your RD will know more about it.  Best of luck.Has anyone else here had low white blood counts with methotrexate? Is that fairly common? I'm reading up on differnet meds now to get more info before my next appt. Juliah,

My WBC is always high.   Don't know what effect that has on the MTX.  I've been on it for over a year.. first the pills, then the injections, now back to the pills... 8 per week.  Don't seem to get nauseous.  Maybe others can shed more light for you.  Good luck!
I've had problems with  my white blood cell count being low.  I've had to go off of the mtx a few times until the wbc count goes back up.  Once it goes back up, I'm right back on the mtx.  But I've been taking mtx for almost 15 years and this didn't start happening until about a year ago.   Not sure why it never happened before...just been recently.
