Could anybody tell me if there on avara 10mg and pedisone 10mg. I started the predisone today and have to start the avara tommorow I am scared to death. I am not feeling well at this time with chills and just not feeling well both my feet are swollen and my hands and fingers and it is hard to walk. Or should I say very painful every step I take

Honestly, I think you are going to find some relief from the prednisone right away and the Avara probably takes some time.

If you can manage the time off for one day, it will probably be worth it because rest is really helpful.

I know you are worried, but a lot of people have already taken this step. It might take a bit for them to find the best meds to have you on. But neither dosage is that high. Prednisone can be very effective in taking the swelling down. If it doesn't, get back with your doctor as he may need to up the dosage.

It is always scarey to start a new med let alone 2. I take 10mg of arava every day and have been on pred as needed. Both of these drugs have helped me.

I hope you feel better soon. I expect that 1 day after taking the pred you will feel lots better. I sometimes get a positive effect within 4 hours. Hello!  The only thing I can speak to is the Prednisone.  I started on Tuesday (have taken 2 doses) 10 mg of Pred and already feel better.  I thought maybe it was in my mind and I really wasn't in as much pain as I originally thought.  But, I think the pred works that well.  I am quite pleased with the relief from the med.  Hang in there!

I want to thank all of you. I take my first dose of avera tonight I thought I would take it at night so if I do get sick I will not be sick tommorow at work and for taking time off work not such a thing were I work. There is one thing I am a nursing assit and I take care of alot of people that are vewry ill not only that I go to work today and my co-workers all have colds so I wonder how long it would take before it puts me down? When I went to my Rhemy and he told me if I am allgeric to this meds there is no more for me because I am a person that has problems with a whole bunch of meds. When I had surgerys in the past I had to wear 3 wrist bans in the the surgery room so they were all aware of what they could give me. I am allgeric to almost everything they give. Latex to big time. I currently take 6mg of Prednisone a day, and started taking 10mg of Arava daily about two weeks ago. So far, I haven't noticed any bad reactions. My sister has also been taking Arava for 8 years, with absolutely no problems. I started taking it because I could no longer stand the brain fog Methotrexate put me into. I'm so happy to be off of that stuff!! I'm really hoping Arava works for me, and I hope it works for you as well. Oh My God I can not believe it. I just had my avara delivered to my house and they told me I had to pay 5.90 and I told them they are crazy I am not paying that. They said all my insurance would pay was 34.00 No way in H-ll I will. I can not pay that much every 30 days

It's worth a try, especially when you can't take so many other things. Also, see if they can get an allergist involved in your care. Working together, sometimes they can find a solution that neither doctor would think about on their own.

5, YIKES!!!! Your prescription must have been for the brand name drug. There's a generic version of Arava (Leflunomide) available now that costs MUCH less, about for a 30 day supply. Ask your doctor to prescribe that instead. To All that replied, I get get the generic and that didn't cost me a penny. What they were trying to do is see if I would take the brand name and like I said i told them you can have it. I had no sleep last night thinking of that and had allot of pain. It seems like if I eat something that has alot of salt in it I suffer 10x as bad. I know that may sound weird to you all but thats the second time that happend to me I could hardly make it to work today. I just wanted to sit down and

Give yourself a break. If you need to take a leave to get well, do it. Health is a fragile thing.. we need to be gentle with ourselves sometimes.

Yes, being alive is so much more important. Pushing too hard will make you more ill.

Listen, other people take off for the flu, the dentist, etc. I don't know why we are so terrible at taking off work when we are so very sick. I think it is the fear. Remember, you should be able to get a doctor's note if it is too big of a problem.

At some point, you may have to tell them that you have RA. I had to because of so many doctor's appointments. Many times, I would work half days. I had to reduce my hours to 20-30 hours per week.

If you find a job that will accomodate you through that, it will help so much. Unfortunately, from what I hear from those in nursing, it is the hardest career in which to get any consideration.

I fully understand what you are saying about quitting work. I felt the same way, like it was giving up. It didn't help that my son said the same thing to me. But he is 22 and he just didn't understand.

There is nothing that says you can't keep working. But you may have to make changes and adjustments. Think about what things are hardest for you at your work and those things that you enjoy the most. Then review the Job Accomodations for RA at www.jan.gov.

After you have searched your heart and what you are legally allowed to ask for, then seek to make changes.

Sometimes, they put me on a month off work and then I was able to work 30 hours a week for another 3 years. That month off work made a big difference while they adjusted medications. It was also very stressful because I had no sick time. But if you have a supportive family that can help you temporarily, possibly you could do something like that. It should be covered under the Family Medical Leave Act if you are a regular employee. I was a contractor, so it didn't apply to me. Also, if you get Short Term Disability, it can help. But be careful because I was back at work for 2 months before I actually got the money.

If your job won't accomodate you, then see if their is another company that you can work for that will have more flexible hours. My boss was very good about letting me come in later, taking off for appointments and keeping extra stress off of me (for the most part). It's something you have to gauge, but your determination can take you a long way.

However, again, your life and well being must come first. I pushed too hard and risked my life doing it. Please don't be as stupid as me.

Hi, Angel. Great news about the generic.  Don't be too worried, if the meds are going to harm you my understanding is it usually takes some time, meanwhile you might get relief. I'm on 10mg prednisone daily, 10mg arava daily, 20mg mtx weekly and folic acid. Also use painkillers. Did have minor nausea and appetite loss but worked around that. From the wild swings in pain levels I know the meds are working, even though it's taken a long time. So do try the drugs and see how you go.

Actually woke up this morning absolutely pain free for 1/2 an hour (bliss) and the rest of the day has been low level pain. This following an almighty flare a few days ago during which I used quite a lot of pain killers. There may be a relationship, not sure yet. Good luck, Des.

Hi Angel,

I'm also on MTX, Arava & Prednisone. I started the MTX in March. It never quite got me where I needed to be, so we added the Arava in July. I started it at the beginning of the month. By the middle of August, I was so much better. It's not perfect. You'll still know you have RA, but with a little luck, you'll be able to function just fine. The meds have caused a few minor problems, but nothing major. I hope it works as well for you. Good luck!
Thanks all for your words of wisdom. I took my first dose of arava last night at 6:00pm and was I sick today and now I took my second dose I thought I was going to vomit all day and my vision was so screwed up. And I was dizzy and had a bad sore throat this common. I don't know if I can life sick everyday. The girls said at work god joan you like very ill and I said oh my god I am. I will try real hard to keep on it. I hard a hard time breatheing to. This must be side affects.of the arava. The predisone doesn't get me sick but I can't say that has helped to much. i go next tuesday for nerve test on my feet. I am not looking forward to it at all. But I have to do this for myself. I have a ? to should I be taking folic acid with the arava. The rhemy had me take it when I took MTX but not with this meds. Well thanks all and have a good day or night. JoanYou feeling worse after eating salty foods doesn't sound that crazy. There are a lot of studies to suggest that high ammounts of sodium in your diet can effect RA. Thats why that medditeranian diet was so popular for a while. I couldn't tell you the science of it all, but there must be something there for them to be researching it. If you think you feel worse after salty foods, try getting some cook books for a healty heart diet, or medditeranian diet. Either one is low in sodium. I tried it a while back, but found that it was just too expensive for me.
