IGA defficiant? | Arthritis Information

Any one else IGA deficiant? I have no IGA apparently this is more common in people with JRA, just wondering if there are others around here! I've heard about this. I have celiac disease as well as jra and Iga def is common to both. My Iga levels were tested for celiac and I guess they were ok, no one mentioned anything, but I've always wondered if they even checked for that.

Here's an overview of immune system deficiencies:

Here's a better one on Selective IGA Deficiency:

Lynk39003.9803703704Well I guess I wont know for sure, because my blood tests will always be negative, and although I did have a colonscopy and endoscopy they did not see anything...dunno if they looked for celiac though. But anyway I feel a LOT better when im gluten free sooooo ill just stay that way....sooo about IGA do you get a ton of sinus infections?

Yup.

My Iga was low. They didn't even bother doing some of the other blood tests for celiac bacause of it.The paper said "negative" for celiac was anything under 25. Mine was 6. I need to find a good family doc, then I can bring my results in with me and just ask. But then again, would even a good fam doc know what they were looking at? I hate the "oh, you don't have this. It's rare."

Colonoscopy isn't diagnostic for celiac. Even with the endoscope, you really need a doctor who knows celiac. Most GIs take 2-3 biopsies, for celiac you need 10-15 biopsies because the damage from celiac is very patchy and can't be seen with the naked eye. Then you need a celiac knowledgable lab to interprete the results. This is why the average time to diagnosis is 10 years!

If the diet is working for you, then there's all the proof you need. You don't need a doc's permission to be gluten free.

The Mayo Clinic, Harvard, Columbia, U of Maryland all have celiac centers that are knowledgable and at the forefront of research. Dr. Green, the Director of Columbia's celiac center just wrote a book, "Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic".

Lynk39004.7178125Thanks, so i guess i wont know for sure ever cause there is no way im going back on gluten long enough for the test to show positive....I dont know if im just intolerent or have celiac, is that possible to be intolerent but not have celiac? But since i have jra, and iga deficiant...its very likely....im also very small and lost some weight before I went gluten free cause my stomach hurt so bad.....sooo yeah. Thanks for the info!

ive only had to stomach flu a couple times but in winter i almost always have a sinus infection...in fact i have my first one of the season. fun fun, being in college makes it worse though ive been sick pretty much since the second week of school, my asthma was out of control! thats alright now, but tonight i dunno whats wrong, there was a lot of dancing and crazy jew stuff cause of Simcha Torah on campus so i was walking and dancing a lot...so of course my joints hurt more, but i visibly saw swollenness which doesnt ussually happen and i got a fever...it only lasted a couple hours its gone already...soo i dunno ill see how it goes tomorrow! but i felt so sick for a couple hours...

Yeah, the sinus thing is a killer. I have trouble with it year round. Daily saline solution is the only thing that really helps for me. My sister gets real bad sinus infections too and she has ulcerative colitus.

More autoimmune weirdness. . .

Primary Immunodeficiency is a group of 100 inherited immune system disorders. IGA deficiency is one of the mildest forms. SCiD - Severe Combined Immunodeficiency is the worst, you might of heard of it called "bubble boy" syndrome. But they don't bubble them anymore!

From Medline Plus:

" Selective deficiency of IgA is defined as low levels of -- or complete absence of -- immune globulin A, which causes decreased immune function in the mucosal surfaces in the mouth, gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestines), and lungs. This deficiency results in increased risk for respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. It is associated with autoimmune diseases "

Why dont you put him on a gluten free diet? Or start on an ilimination diet, all my GI tests were normal too soo i did an ilimination diet and figured out that im gluten intolerent....We're trying. But its very costly :( We don't make that much money, he's only part-time since he's so ill. And so stubborn....lol "but I want the WHOLE burger...not just the meat..." Grrr. There's ONE store that sells gluten free breads and stuff. Wanna know how much a pack of hamburger buns is? Sixteen EFFING DOLLARS. :| Makes me mad. FOR HAMBURGER BUNS!!!!!! argh!!!! I don't know what else to do with him. I don't know what else it could be. His symptoms are so vauge. Even the doctors look at him like he's crazy, they have no idea. *sigh* oh well.Hello,
This is my first time here. A friend saw this thread and told me about it
at a different board. Our 18-month-old daughter has JA, and blood work
shows IGa or IGg (?) as being under 20, and her rheum is concerned
about celiac disease. Sometimes she gets very pale/lethargic, with
redness around her eyes, and her bm's have been extremely foul, loose.
(((yuck)))

As I've read this thread, who was it - someone mentioned their asthma
getting worse? I have killer asthma myself, and there has never been a
known "reason" for it. I think I'm going to try going gluten-free!!! ... I
also have (juvenile-onset) diabetes, and hypothyroidism - an autoimmune
disaster.

Our son, three, has a form of autism called pdd-nos, and our 18-mo-old
is just like he was at that age. Her ANA is outrageously high, 1:1280.
Interestingly, many autistic children have been "recovered" by eating a
gluten-free, casein-free diet.

Hmm!! I'm not very excited about giving up gluten, but maybe that's
what my kids and I need to do!

Holly -

When I was teaching pre-school, we had a little boy who was SEVERELY autistic. No medication could calm him, or keep him on a controlable level. I thought they were all crazy when they decided to put him on a gluten-free and casein-free diet. But as soon as they did, his medications started working, and he was controlable. He was a much calmer child, and actually seemed to pop into our world for a while every now and then. :) Before that he was on his own planet 24/7 with no change in sight. So I believe it. Celiac disease IS herditary as well....so perhaps it is what you need. Don't listen to me though.....I'd hate to tell you something wrong. LoL It still amazes me about autism though. I remember when my mom was teaching and there was MAYBE one autistic child in the whole special needs school. Now there's several per classroom. It's just amazing. And the general age of diagnosis is so young..and odd...I dunno. I just really wonder sometimes. Feels like we're missing a huge clue.

WalMart GV (good value) brand labels gluten free.

Lynk39006.1437268518Talking about sinus infections, Ive got one. I think im going to try to set the record for the most sinus infections this winter

What do you take for sinus?

Where are you in FL?? I'm up in the panhandle and we had tornado warnings/watches all day. It was windy as HELL out! And COLD COLD COLD!!! >.< But this is the season for the sinus terror. I take Tylenol Cold & Sinus with the cool burst thingy. They work wonders!

Port Saint Lucie. Wasn't stormy here, just cool and dry.

For those who aren't Floridian, "cool" means under 85 degrees.

Tylenol Gluten Free List: http://www.glutenfreeforum.com/index.php?automodule=blog& ;blogid=43&showentry=319

For sinus infection im just on what the student health center gave me....amoxcixilin, im also taking sudafed sinus, rhinocort, zyrtex, singular and flovent for allergy and asthma stuff....Tylenol Sinus Severe Congestion. That's what it's called! Mmmm My hero....

I usually take amox or the Z-pack thing. I'm terrible with sinus meds, they either knock me unconcious or wire me up like a dozen cups of coffee. And neither kind work!

Using plain saline solution everyday seems to put it off, extend the time between infections.

Being IGAd must be tough in a dorm!Ahhhh the z packs....doesnt help me doesnt give my enough time to get all done with the injection,, my problem is having the sinus infection not go away fully
Yea its been interesting, pretty much had been sick since ive got here, last month 3 weeks 6 visits to the health center, but its not all cause of the IGAd thing I started enbrel a month ago, and ive been on methotrexate for a while, soooo they all mess up our already messed up immune system! :)
