There is such a controversy over the subject of alternative treatments that I found a really good article posted on the Arthritis Today web site. I know some of you are very interested in learning about different options and this is a good, basic article that covers several view points including how to talk to your doctor about trying different approaches.
A lot of us, including myself, do use "alternative methods" besides our regular medicines. I think treating arthritic conditions and autoimmune diseases is a layered approach. It is also a very individualistic decision.
Hope this helps:

Deanna~
Thank you for the interesting and informative article on alternative treatments. It's about time someone posted something that will help us instead of inflame us.
I am going to talk to my RD about some of this. My insurance pays for some alternative treatments and I am going to find out which ones.
Thanks for posting the link. I'm pursuing an integrative approach for myself that includes drugs that work for me (...Humira at the moment) and Yoga for stress relief (breathing exercises and meditation) and exercise (postures). The Yoga is something I've started recently and it's made a huge difference in my ability to deal with the stress and the mental / emotional aspects of my illness. Drugs are great when they work, but only alleviate some of the physical symptons. They are not a cure and we need a more holistic approach to deal with other aspects of the disease (...only my opinion, of course!). I don't believe in or pursure "magic" cures...but I do believe in other "alternatives" to western medicine practices. Thanks Deanna I am always interested in hearing of different alternative treatmeants. I am going to take a look. Thanks Deanna! Although I know I need medication, I believe that my alternative treatments (massage and relaxation techniques) have helped me also.I know how much help yoga has been for me. I think the yoga, massage, accupuncture, swimming and Enbril have been the contributing factors to my current success. I was a basket case at this time last year. It took me so much time to just get down the stairs in the morning.
This disease is so individual...so many layers. I am so thankful to have some money for yoga classes and insurance that pays for most of my meds. I feel fortunate.
Thanks for the interesting article Deanna. It's food for thought.
