What activities do you enjoy? | Arthritis Information

I have been an athlete all of my life and was diagnosed with RA my junior year in college.  At that time, I was a varsity athlete playing volleyball, basketball, and softball.

After my disease progressed over time, I learned to adjust my activities to match the level of my disease activity and to explore new activities when I could no longer do the ones that I previously enjoyed.  After 20+ years of RA, I've had to do quite a bit of adjusting...

I still get out and try my best to enjoy the following activities.

- Fly fishing (this truly is an addiction - talk about a great stress reducer!)
- Camping
- Hiking
- Gardening
- Riding my 1100cc Yamaha motorcycle

I'd love to hear what activities other folks with RA enjoy - perhaps it will give me some ideas about new things to try...  Feel free to post more photos.  It's always fun to see folks with arthritis getting the most they can out of life!

Attached are 2 recent photos of me dragging a fly while steelheading on the Deschutes river in Oregon.  Not bad for a 47 year old gal, eh? Awesome!!! I love people that don't give up what they love, they just "adjust" Life is all about adjustments. I'm more of a homebody than that though :/ I'm a computer and video game geek!!! I would love to be more acvite outdoors, but living in FL so much of the year is spent in 100 degree weather with 80% humidity, it's just NOT possible. :(

Your pictures are awesome.  You look so happy and relaxed.

I was always a very active person.  I am adjusting my expectations as to what I can do at the moment.  I hope to someday be able to run again.  Hey without hope what is there.

Yes, adjusting to a new lifestyle can be challenging sometimes.

It's great to get out and try new things.  I find that I feel a lot better about myself if I push myself sometimes  a little bit beyond the bounds of my RA just to prove to myself that I can still do things that may seem a bit daunting.

I hope some other folks will post pics of themselves enjoying the outdoors!

Hi,

I'm new to the message boards, I have JRA. I was a national gymnast training 23 hours per week before I was diagnosed... I still have an incredible passion for gymnastics and I competed and made nationals for two years after I was diagnosed. I think if you love something that much push through and enjoy it for as long as you can. I am retired now, university student... i love to go for hikes around campus.. we are on a mountain. I like reading, and well...studying is something i have to do. I like trying new things but gymnastics will always be a great part of my life.

That's great that you kept with the gymnastics after being diagnosed.  I did the same thing with volleyball and I am so glad that I enjoyed those extra years of competition before I had to stop playing.

Glad you are able to enjoy hiking on campus.  Where are you located in Canada?  I now live in Colorado and hiking opportunities abound which is great.  There is enough variety that I can find a hike to fit my level of activity for that day.

I am new to these Message Boards I like Swimming and Ice Skating and watching and Playing Football, I guess with me having Osteoarthritis its a bit hard me going Ice Skating and playing football.  But hopeful someday my Condition may right its self for me to do the activities I want to do. I enjoy reading, writing, outdoors and sports.

I love any and all sports... it's all good by me. Reading is fantastic as well... although usually when I get the time to read I am already so tired that I end up falling asleep. Haha

Hey as far as my activities are concerned, I just love dancing. I have been in Australia for 8 years and Cricket is one of the popular game there so I also love playing cricket. I have tried to play soccer several times but I am not comfortable on it. :)
