1st dose of Mtx | Arthritis Information

I took my 1st dose of Mtx last night about 8:00.  That stuff is wild.  I felt like my extremeties were going to fall off.  I also got one hell of a buzz.  I thought maybe by taking it at night that today I would be o.k.  Well, I'm still kinda buzzing, a little lightheaded, and a little nausous.  I feel kinda out of it.

Will this go away?  I'm only on 10mg.

I've never felt quite that way......but it affects us all differently.

Definately take yours at night so you can sleep through a majority of the side effects.

I take my first one on saturday and your post scared the _____ out of me.  I would have freaked out!  Chicken that I am, I am only taking1/2 this first week to see how I feel.Poof - Just to reassure you,  I had no side affects at all, either on the first dose or since.   Everybody is different and many of us tolerate is very well.  It takes approx 3 months to see any significant improvements so the quicker you take the prescribed dose the better. Good luck. GillianPhatgirl.... see how you feel tomorrow... yawn..  Hope you aren't mixing any drinks with that!   I didn't feel any rush...  just grouchy next day and tired! Thank you Calgary.  I took only a half dose my first time too...but the side effects that I had like mouth sores and hairloss didnt start untill after several weeks. I take the injected MTX though...to avoid tummy trouble.

I have been on MTX for about 3 months will virtually no problems...I did have some fatigue the first couple weeks but that was it.

I started on 7.5 mg and have now increased to 10 mg.  Interestingly, it worked pretty quickly.  I felt like a new person.  I still have my share of "issues" but I can walk and use my hands (for the most part)

So don;t be nervous about taking it...it effects people differently.

Thanks to all who responded!!!
I feel o.k. today, just a little tired.  Yesterday I just felt like I had a good buzz going all day.  (without alcohol I was just really mellow, and not much affected me yesterday.  Today, I'm back to my spunky self.  It did kinda freak me out, but if this is as bad as it gets, I'm good to go!
Thanks,
Phatgirl2

Glad to hear you are ok today!!!  I'm doing my first injection of mtx tonight and I'm a bit nervous but also ready to feel better.

For those of you who get tired from it, does that decrease with time?

I just get  really tired, and a little nauseated. I take mine about 4 pm on fridays so I can sleep. If I take it at bedtime, the nausea wakes me up.  I sometimes get mouth sores, but take folic acid with it, so that hasn't really been an issue.

I used to take my MTX on Sunday nights. I could actually feel it hit my bloodstream........it would freak me out.

Gena,

OMG, that's exactly the way I felt.  I thought I was just having some psychosomatic symptoms because I managed to freak myself out thinking I was going to be really sick for days.  It wasn't near as bad as I thought.

Just looking back from when I first started it (I take plaquinel as well) the tiredness has certainly decreased.  I remember feeling so heavy and stiff in my legs walking etc, - that has  much improved.   I'll add that it's not the same as when I didn't have RA of course but the combination of the two drugs must be helping now. We have just come back from a holiday in California and last year we were away at the same time (not on Methotroxate). The difference was significant - I had a lot more energy this year.  Good luck.  Gillian - Calgary

Can you explain this better?

I took my fifth weeks dose last night, the first two weeks all I did was sleep the whole weekend.  I then started taking the whole 7.5 mg on Friday night and that eased up the fatigue tremendously.  I upped the folic acid as well because I was getting mouth sores.  The main thing I notice any more is on Saturdays I'm dizzy a bit and the darn walls in the house jump out and hit me for no reason...

I have noticed a difference in my feeling better and the joints don't hurt as bad, still room for improvement in my opinion.  My friends and coworkers tell me they have noticed a big difference as well.... a sparkle in my eye that hasn't been there in a while.  I see the Rhuemy in three weeks and going to ask for an increase in the MTX.  By Wednesday/Thursday it's like it has worn off...  my hands especially are killing me again.

I would take my MTX on Sunday nights and go upstairs..lay down and watch Desperate Housewives. I could feel the mtx hit my bloodstream..it would get really loopy. I would feel a warm surge go throughout my body. Does that make sense? It is really powerful and it worked well for me. I just couldn't tolerate it...my liver enzymes were really high. The next morning I would always feel hungover....except there was no alcohol involved. Well, thats my story and Im sticking to it!!

Thank you, that does help explain thingsOther than a little fatigue, I've never felt anything. Not with the MTX, not the Arava, not Celebrex, not prednisone. They don't change my mood, they don't make me feel drugged. The only thing is that a lot of the pain is gone, and a lot of the mobility is back. Everyone really does have a different reaction.
