Good news, Bad news | Arthritis Information

I received a letter today from social security asking how much money I made on short term disability.  It was a sizable amount- 37k.  I am thinking since time is up for them to make a decision, I am going to be approved.  That is why they want to know how much I made on short term.  So they can deduct that from my check.  So I will probably not get back earnings.  The good news - I think it means I am going to be approved.  Am I reading too much into this?  I was told they had to make their decision by Nov. 24 and it was not a denial letter.  It seems if they only want earnings, it makes sense to me they are trying to calculate my disability payment.

What do you think of my logic?

SSDI is based upon your average income for x amount of time prior to getting  disability. They are probably  figuring out your alloted benefits.

Kathy,  Nope.  I was told it was figured on what I paid in.  Since I have been in four retirement programs - I am screwed.  I was told I would only get a little over 500 a month.  I can deal with that as I get other benefits that I need.  ONly thing I believe, is it is a good sign.  NO denial, only more info.  There deadline was Nov. 24 to deny me.  I am hoping to get Medicare and In-home care.  Sadly, I need it.  I hope you are right though but I don't think so.  I will kiss your feet if you are right Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers!

Kathy, they already told me my benefit amount and it is not much.  The good thing is it will open doors to other services and eventually health insurance.

So what do you guys think?  Doesn't it sound like I might be approved?

I have no idea on the whole ssi thing works but I'm wishing you lots of luck!Roxy,

I really don't know anything about SSDI but I was wondering, if you are qualified to collect Social Security because of disability, why can't you collect from your retirement plans because of disablitiy?  In other words, you would have a disability retirement.  I do know people who are on a disability retirement, but I really don't know what they had to do to collect it. It might be worth your time to check with your plan administrators to determine what you have to do to start collecting your retirement before the age of 67 because of disability.

Good Luck and your in my prayers.

Because I worked seasonally and exempt sometimes.  I would work six months so I would have to work ten years to make five years at one place to be vested.  I worked 10 years at my PERS job but the first two years were exempt.  I have always worked but the last twenty were seasonally as I loved doing different kinds of work.

Two reasons - you are sick enough and you are older. I think it might be different if you were 25.

Thanks Marion.  I sure hope you are right.  I talked to SS but it was about Kelsey.  I also asked about my case but they did not have that info.  I told the worker about the letter I received and she said it would make sense they are calculating how much to send me.  Fingers crossed

This is my timetable when I filed for SSD. Maybe it will help you. I do know that your local field office does the calculating of your benefits and all the background of the financial aspects and the state office does the final approval of the medical and then that is sent to your field office and they calc your payment.

In June I applied using the website. Within a day or two the local field office called me and sent me release forms for the doctors to sign and send back and told me I need to fill out another form online called a disabilitiy work report.

I was very slow in returning my authorizations and completing the additional forms, I returned them August 30.

They sent me a letter saying they had not received my doctors forms on Oct. 5, but They had crossed in the mail with them and they received them on the 6th

October 12, they set up an appointment to go for an exam on Oct. 19. That was an interesting experience!!

Online you can check your status if you apply online, so I kept checking it, on Nov. 3 I checked and it said they had made a decision and I would receive notice by mail. It did not say if I was approved or not.

NOV 3!!! I checked my bank account online and I had a deposit from the US treasury. When I applied online I had filled out for direct deposit.

So YAY!!!! I have the money but have not received my approval letter yet.

I received STD for 6 months from my employer and now I am receiving LTD from them. Social security does not pay you for the first 5 months of not working and then will pay you starting the 6th month whether you received STD or not for those 5 months is not important it goes by your last date worked.

I last worked Dec. 22 Received STD until  June 18 then it went to LTD on 19. Social Security backpaid me from June - October.

So you can recieve STD during the first 5 months waiting period for SSD.

But the great news is it is possible to be approved the first time!!!!

Hope this helps you,

Karen

Daisy, you're kidding! :(

We've been waiting since JUNE to hear back from them. All they tell us is that it "It's pending" What does that even MEAN? We went into the office to fill out the info. I really think it's because it's for Justin, and he's only 23. They think we're frauds. :( I don't know why else it would take so long.

I bet it is the age. I turned the magic 50 in September!!!!! I felt like a fraud too, which is really sad because I know I am not!!! I am truly shocked I was approved the first time because I hear so many horror stories. I have done some research though and it seems different states have different approval rates.

When you apply online and check the status it tells what they are waiting on. Mine said they were working on the medical portion when I checked.

I hope you guys get an answer soon!!!!

Karen

I was absolutely stunned when I was approved the first time I applied. I got sick in June, applied in Sept and got my first check in January.I applied in May and they said "if I am approved" I will know by Dec.
