Mtx and mouth ulcers | Arthritis Information

Hello!!!
I took my 2nd dose of 10 mg of Mtx on Wed night and have a mouth ulcer this a.m.  I thought I read somewhere that someone did a mouthwash to eliminate that problem.  Does anyone know what you rinse with?
Also, does the injectible Mtx work as well as the oral?  Any mouth ulcers with the injectible?  I'm thinking about switching.  Anyone out there have pro or cons?
Thanks,
Phatgirl2
Don't have the answers, but do a search on "mouth sores". This subject has come up a lot. You are taking folic acid, right? How much?I was told the injections actually work better than the pills and have less gi upset.  I think the mouth sores will happen with either form.  Folic acid is supposed to help. I'm doing my second shot tonight and haven't noticed any sores yet but have had more hair shedding than usual.Hello!  I'm taking 1mg of Folic Acid daily.  I didn't notice any sores upon my 1st dose, but after my 2nd.  Micheleb, let me know how your second dose goes.
Thanks,

I had these with MTX also, they were like little blood blisters but only lasted a few hours or so.

I've actually had some recently, really tiny ones and I am only on enbrel. Again they only last a few hours and don't bother me so I never worry about them.

Not much help am I?

Hi Phatgirl,

I take 7.5mg MTX per week (along with remicade every 8 weeks) and I take 5mg folic acid every day apart from my MTX day. I've only had 1 mouth ulcer, when I had a bad cold. Maybe ou need extra folic acid?

You can take at least up to 3mg of folic acid safely with the MTX...I hadnt heard of anyone before taking 5mg...but check with your doctor. I take the injectable and get mouthsores....however less frequently with the folic acid. Also some hair shedding but not anything to dramatic. I have a sensitive stomach and the injectable just made sense. I havnet had any GI problems....been on it for almost a year.

I use Listerine for the mouthsores, which still come up once in a while (I also take about 2 mgs. of folic acid).

The Listerine does initially burn, but it is worth it, as the sores go away almost immediately after I rinse with the antiseptic. I swish until tears are pouring down my cheeks, and there's no sense of taste or feeling in my tongue...

Ahh, good times...
