My knees... my knees... | Arthritis Information

Okay... many of you have knee problems, so I need your help!
The last couple of days both of my knees (the tops of them by the knee cap) are swollen and hurting.  It's worse in the morning, but seems like the pain lasts all day long.  What is this new thing that's going on with me?   The knee pain I have had in the past has always been below the knee cap or to the left or right... not on top.  What could it be?? That is where my knees hurt Vicki.  My right one lately has been "jumping" like when the doctor uses that little hammer to test your reflexes, only problem is there is no hammer.  Sorry Vicki - RA is full of surprises.  It can find places on your body you did not know you had

I am usually swollen below my knees, but at times, the knee joint and above it also swell. Keep in mind I have quite a bit of damage to my knees though and will be having surgery sometime soon.

I don't if you have been diagnosed with OA. But there is a lot of things that they can do to ease your pain and strengthen your knees to help prevent having surgery.

Hope it eases up.

Because knees are so vulnerable to damage, I'd consider having it checked out.

Does anyone have pain at the back of the leg, in the bend of the knee?  That's what I have been having this last week.

My knee pain has always been under the knee cap...just a really deep ache. Mine is torn miniscus. Putting a cool pak or one of those heat patches is helpful. Sometimes pain behind the knee is ligament or tendon related.  The doc does a range of motion test in the office to determine if that's what it is.  Hopefully it is just one of those quirky arthritis pains.  I had a torn miniscus years ago and had orthroscopic surgery then.  This doesn't feel anything like that.  Since it is above and on the knee cap, and a little 'clicking' feel to it, I wonder?    And, yes Deanna, I do have OA too.  I am also weaning down on the prednisone.... starting today at 6 mgs.... every two weeks I lose one mg!  Maybe the RA is mad at me I am going to Vegas this weekend for a girls get-to-gether  (We have a group of 9 women..... we are called GOGS...  good ole girls!!).  One of our GOGs is in the Ms. Senior USA pageant!
So, sitting at a slot machine won't put too much pressure on the knee, right???
Anyway, I will check with the RD if it gets worse.  Maybe I should up the pred to 7 for a few days???
   Hi Vickilee,
The clicking noise is the ligaments and tendons of your knee reacting to pressure. If, I was you, I would get it checked out. It could be from your OA. If it's a grinding sound, that's bone rubbing against bone.
I found out,the hard way, that waiting and doing nothing will cause more pain and damage. If I had listen to my knee sooner, I wouldn't have so much damage and my recovery from the total knee would be quicker.

Enjoy Vegas and check out the new hotels. It should be nice weather. I haven't been there this year and my friends up there miss me. Can't do the driving and walking yet. Good Luck on the slots. They have penny ones now.

MarisaOh take me with you!!! I LOVE Vegas!!! I went with a group of
girlfriends 2 years ago and it was the best trip ever. Have a
great time and if you hit the jackpot, don't forget about your AI
friends!! Sometimes an ache behind the knee is the start of a Baker's Cyst too. I get those way more than anyone should. Sometimes they're really small, and I can manage, and others I have to break out the ol' immobilizer and crutches. UGH. Started getting those at 12, and they just didn't go away. Every time I'd have an appt for an MRI, it would be so long after it started, that there was nothing to see. Loser docs. LOL But those are usually visible, they stick your skin out so far...*shivers* ITS SO GROSS. My knees have always popped when I bent them but they never hurt until about a year ago.  Now, they pop when I straighten them and that hurts.  The pain is at the top just a little towards the inside but still on top, does that make sense?  I assume its the RA, I've mentioned it to the rheumy.  It hurts so bad by the end of the day, it sometimes keeps me awake at night.  I find its much worse the more I keep my knees bent.  Like when I'm sitting at me desk, they hurt less if I keep my legs slightly extended.  Sitting like that hurts my lower back more though.......I had to reschedule my physical therapy until next week but its something I'm going to talk to them about.  If they have any good answers, I'll be sure to let you know. When you sit in a chair, it's easier to prop your feet on something, something that's only about the height of a shoe box. Your knees are bent at an angle then, so you won't have as much pain, and it forces you to lean against the chair back and sit up right. At our computer desk, our sub-woofer is perfect for me. That or the kitten when she lays under me. LOL I do find Blue Emu creme (which they sell at Walmart, etc.) is very good in helping the aches I have.  You might give it a try.

I know what a Baker's Cyst looks like, since my son had one years ago after very strenuous ice skating.  ( I was terrified when I first saw it, cause I was sure he had a tumor!)  His eventually went away.

I don't have a Baker's Cyst.  My GP said it sounds like OA.  I say it's BS.
