Is botox or cortisone shots better? | Arthritis Information

for pain relief? I am worried about side effects. My pain is bad and the areas are all parts of the head, neck, temples, behind the eyes etc... Is cortisone a steroid? Can I get manly features? I have suffered for 6 years and nothing has worked. How long do these shots last for? Thank you!!!

Any info appreciated. Thank you!

Um...EEK. Just my opinion but botox just seems CRAZY. I've never had it though, so I know what I'm saying may no be very founded.......but injecting something that USED to be a deadly disease into your body....just doesn't ring as a good idea to me. Sorry. LoL I'm sure there will be plenty of other people with opinions along shorty to answer your question. Hehe Just wait! WELP.... I TRIED BOTOX, ONCE.  THE PAIN OF THE NEEDLES WAS TOO MUCH TO BEAR.. I'LL STICK WITH MY WRINKLES... HOWEVER, IT DID MAKE ME LOOK BETTER, I'LL ADMIT!   BUT, SINCE I WAS ON PREDNISONE, THE BRUISES AT THE NEEDLE 'PRICK' MADE ME LOOK LIKE I WAS IN A FIGHT, UNTIL THE BRUISING WENT AWAY  I DIDN'T DO IT FOR PAIN RELIEF, JUST 'EYE RELIEF'! vickilee39036.8025810185There is some info on the Arthritis Foundation website about
using botox in the knees for patients with OA. It is in the section
where they are posting notes about the convention this week.
My mom worked for a plastic surgeon and tried botox once. It
helped some with her tension headaches.

Don't look at me... I am way too poor for botox and I am afraid of needles.

Hope someone comes along to give you more opinions.

Well I have no experience with botox; but I've had numerous cortisone injections over the years and I swear by them. In my case my doctors have always given them to me and then adjusted my medication at the same time. So; once the cortisone injection does in fact loose it's effects my meds have caught up enough that I never loose the relief.....at least not for a really long time.

I highly recommend them....and I've never once had any manly type adverse affects from them.

Hope this helps. If you've never tried them....it's certainly worth a shot. Good Luck!!

One question; Do you have RA? The problems you describe in your head doesn't sound like RA to me. And yes; cortisone is a steriod.

And Welcome to AI. Stick around.

The kind of cortizone injected into an area of pain will not give you manly features, hair, muscles;nothing like that.  So, don't worry about it.

I know that Botox is used for many things other than wrinkles.  Talk to your doc about and see what he suggests/recommends.

Thank you for your replies. I am a 30 year old single female. I wish I could take medication but am so prone to side effects with everything I have tried. I have tmjd and osteoarthritis in my jaw and tmj's. My pain is worst in my head, neck, temples. I also have super dry painful eyes from sjorgens and nauseated 24/7 since I had an upper neck manipulation by a chiropractor 6 weeks ago. So I am pretty miserable and want to rule out any neck/brain injury from the adjustment, and get rid of this nausea, and then go ahead with some injection because the chiro also left me with even more pain now and I had a lot to start. I posted here despite not having RA but OA because there are more people here. Hope that is okay. Thank you again.

Absolutely ok...I just asked to understand your situation. Everyone's welcome here. (Just about everyone anyway

Stories like your confirms my thoughts on Chiropractors. They can do more harm than good in certain situations and it's a risk to go to them.

Hope you're feeling better soon!
