MTX and diarrhoea | Arthritis Information

Hi Everyone, sorry have been away and need to catch up.  Just quickly, I have had my dose of MTX increased to 15mg and was ok for the first week, just headaches, fatigue and nausea, which is really the first time in 3 months (since I started treatment) that Ive had side effects.

Last night I took my weekly dose and have been up since 3am with diarrhoea and still it goes on as I try and get ready to go to work.  Its Monday am in New Zealand.

My question is, can I take Immodium or Lomitil to stop the diarrhoea so I can go to work safely?  I have done a search but cant find the info and have to go soon.  Can anyone help with information about this?  Right now Im thinking I better take a change of clothes!

Love to all
Wendy

Can you call your pharmacist and ask?

That's what I would do.  Good Luck, I hope you feel better shortly.

I had a similar problem with MTX and took Imodium...though I tried not to use it more than once a week.  It never caused me any problems.

Thanks!  Good advice.  I am at work and it seems to have settled and I left the Imodium at home!  So its just as well its settled.

Now I just have to get the headache and nausea under control.  Its weird how there are no side effects and then he ups the dose and its all on! :(

Hopefully it will sort out the RA though.  Boy has it been a difficult year!  Ive had enought tbh!

Should I take more?  I am trying to work here and I feel like Ive been hit by a train!  Thanks so much Trixie66 :)  I appreciate your advice, will call the office and arrange that. MTX pills contains alot of Lactose.  if you are intolerant (like I am) you will have bad lost of problems.  Once I took my lactaids with my pills my diarrhea went away.

Hi Wendy,

Sorry you are having such a s****Y day! lol. On a serious note, have you considered taking MTX by injection? I had a horrible time with the MTX pills so we switched to the shots and now my side effects are almost non-existent. I take 18 mg per week and only have trouble with blisters on my tongue which the dr. took care of with 1 mg. of folic acid a day, no more vomiting and diharrea, not even a queasy feeling now. Can you call your rd and ask about taking immodium? Either them or a pharmacist should be able to tell you what to take. hope you have a good day!

gentle hugs,

Jamie
