Costochronditis is where either RA or prednisone has caused some detoriation in your rib cage, usually under your breast bone. It is not serious, but can be very painful. Sometimes, they will also check out your heart and lungs to make sure that there is no problems with it. Mine tends to hurt when other parts of my body flares up. Using a heating pad or an ice pack can help. Your doctor is the best source of information and how it should be treated. He may give you something to help with the pain. I have PA not RA and my PA affects the joints between tendons, ligaments, muscles and bone/cartilage. I have intercostal chondritis and it's awful - when it first started the pain was bad when I took a breath so I didn't take deep enough breaths and ended up in hospital slightly blue! Mine still hurts when I get a general flare up but the breathing issue can be bad, I do exercises when it's not too bad to help with my chest expansion (making sure your chest gets bigger whe you breathe in to allow your lungs to fill and empty properly). When it's sore I use heat, a hot water bottle "cuddled" is the best I've found and making sure I'm lying or sitting with good posture is very important! Glad to "meet" you, and welcome!i was diagnosed with costochondritis april 2006 and i hv pain that comes and goes for at least 5 months. now i am taking mobic, a pain reliever and i am still having pain now and then. sad thing is, bec. of this..i hv been a hypochondriac. this costo things mimics heart attack. but my doctor assured me that i dont have a heart problem of any sort and i was relieved. but stil when the pain hits me..i am afraid. if you want some chat about what i am undergoing.. ping me at pea_1208 or pea_ester or u can send an email at ester.abuel@yahoo.co.uk
