A new kind of pain | Arthritis Information

So, after about 13 months of being on Prednisone (off it now) and Methotrexate (still on it), I've had a new kind of concentrated pain the last few days.  Several days ago my left leg from my knee to my hip felt like it had an electric current running through it.  Today it is just the left knee (where the arthritis started) and it has a really bad, very concentrated electrical type pain in it, and it is quite staggering when it hits.  I took some lodine a few hours ago but it hasn't seemed to have done anything...  This is very different than the really really achy feeling arthritis pain I've had the last few years.  Anyone else had this type of really strong pain?

Sorry no one has responded Lee. I'm not sure if it's just your description or what. It doesn't really sound like anything I've experienced.

Hope you're feeling beetter today.

Welcome to AI.

I wonder if it is a pinched nerve of some type?  That's what the "electrical current" kind of pain makes me think of.  Do you have back issues that could be causing pressure on the nerve to your leg?  I would ask your doctor - he may want to do an MRI. Does sound like a pinched nerve or something similar. You have to make the trip to the doctor. The pain should be enough motivation. If you have swelling around a nerve it can cause the shocky feeling...anti inflammatories and ice paks...elevation and rest can help....it may take up to 2 days to get the swelling down. You should follow up with your doctor though too. You dont have swelling or redness to the skin do you?

Hi,

I get a pain just like you describe, it starts in my spine and kind of shoots around my ribs to the front. It feels like I imagine an electric shock would feel and makes me shout out sometimes and double over in pain it's so strong! I talked to my Dr about it and she suggsted that hte imflammation was affecting nerves, it only happens occasionally so I supose I've just ignored it really... Yours sounds like it's a bit more constant - I'd definately get an appt with your Rheumatologist and get it checked out. Good Luck!

KT

KT, I can't believe your doctor didn't refer you over to a neurologist especially with pain that strong. It happens again or anything else weird like that, please see one.

Also sounds like it could be the electrical shocks that I call the stabbing owee's that I get because of the Neuropathies I have that were caused by the swelling and inflammation in my legs and feet which ultimatly damaged alot of the perphial nerves in my lower body.

Good luck.  Get a referral to a good neurologist.
