I was referred for acupuncture a while back but didnt have any positive effect, has anyone else tried this with any good results

Hi,

I have medical acupuncture (as opposed to chinese version) for pain relief and it works ok but I have heard mixed reports. I think alot depends on the practitioner. I do find that it eases the pain and helps to get rid of muscle spasms but it doesn't totally get rid of either... One of the things brought up in a BBC study was that if the needles are inserted then removed there is little effect on the pain centres but if they are manipulated the pain centre in your brain is stimulated and they think that's why it works.

My GP is a trained practitioner, as is my Chiropractor so I have it at the GP when I'm poor but when I can afford it I go to my Chiro and get both done together.

I hope this helps!

Yes definitely I think it helps.  For me, I have had RA among other autoimmue diseases for 17 years. I have done acupunture off and on for much of that time. It does not take away the pain, but it does take the edge off.  I went in thinking, and some practioners want to believe, that they are going to be the one to "cure" you of the pain.  Well, no such luck.  But it stops the sharpness the RA can cause. And, I truly believe that it helps jump start your body to better health. It's worked best for me when I am in a flare. I am also a big fan of mind, body healing.  Especially for us with autoimmune diseases, we need to heal from (deep) inside out.  -Suzi
