Deanna, I checked out the site for vocational rehab and it sounds like a pretty good deal, although it didn't answer all my questions.  But was wondering if it will interfere with unemployment benefits, drawing unemployment and getting that assistance, then going back to school to learn a new trade/skill would be AWESOME.

Thanks

Phil

Was just re-reading the web site, looks like it is for vets who have a service connected disability, unless I'm reading it wrong.

There is a separate vocational rehab program for veterans with disability. That's different from state-run vocational disability programs.

If you're a vet but don't have a service-related disability, still check with the veterans service just to make sure the state-run program is the right one for you or if you might still qualify for some sort of vocational rehab for veterans. That way you know you aren't missing out on some help that might be available to you.

I believe you still can get unemployment and other state aid. They might not help you get it. You call them up and they set up an orientation meeting where they explain the program in your state. Then you will get assigned a Vocational counsellor. It is very important to push for what you want. Sometimes, they just want to get you into any job. Which is ok for some people, but if you really have a hankering for new adventures, be sure to speak up. They have very clear cut lines as to what they will and will not pay for.

But it is one government agency that is required to help you quickly. They want you sending in tax dollars just as quick as possible.

Go for it. It's at least worth investigating. At some point, when I get better, I hope to get their help in starting a freelance business again. In that case, they will pay for adaptive equipment, etc. But you have to have a business plan. I'm not up to it now. But it's on my dream list.

It would be so nice to go back to school and learn a new trade, to have that piece of paper that says "hire him".

I've never done any of this before, so I am hoping that there is something out there that can help pay the bills until I get there.

Besides checking with Vocational Rehab, check with your local college/community colleges. Also there are several online colleges that might be good especially for computers.

You sound excited. I think this is definitely smelling like opportunity.
