PMR Hereditary? | Arthritis Information

Hi All, I have been talking to a lady today who told me she has had PMR & GCA for over 5 years( still taking 4-5mg Pred) and that her sister had been diagnosed a few months back. Their deceased mother had been suffering from Arthritis? for years and they are now certain she had PMR.

I have read on one of the posts that someone has had a family history of PMR. My mother has Arthritis requiring 2 shoulder & 2 knee replacements. She gets a lot of pain up the back of her neck from Oestoarthritis? I am going to ask her Dr if PMR has been considered.

Has anone else heard of a Gene .. family history of PMR?

Merry Christmas .. Happy Healthy New Year to all. Lyn

Morning, Lyn   I don't have anyone in my family that's had PMR except a cousin, and she doesn't even take prednisone.  She said she just, "goes on and ignores it."  Either she's misdiagnosed or has a very light case.  No way she could just ignore it if she had it like we do.    My grandmother had RA, but in her hands mostly, so I don't think that could have been misdiagnosed.   I think I would remember if someone had been in as much pain as we are.  So, I really think I'm the only lucky one!  I'm going to the rhuemy today, and will probably stop by the "sin boats" and lose a quarter.  My doctor is in Shreveport, La. and the slot machines are calling me. It's fun  and makes the trip more interesting.  Besides, it keeps my shoulder and elbow loosened up...at least on the right side.   Have a great day. Hi Betsy, Hope you won the Jackpot! Retail Therapy does it for me so I am in my element getting Christmas Pressies for everyone! Got to make the most of good days. How did you get on with the rhuemy? Lyn

Hello Girls

My mother has fibromyalgia and she has stiff shoulders and thighs and is in considerable pain. She also has OA, glaucoma and heart problems. My maternal grandmother had RA, myxoedema (sp.?), vasculitis and Alzheimer's. My father had vascular problems also.

We have a lot of autoimmune diseases going around our family. What with my husband having diabetes I don't hold out much hope for my daughters!!!!!! They all have Osgood-Schlatters Syndrome for a start!

I still can't understand why one day you can feel (almost) normal and the next day you can barely walk. Today has been a bad day. I just hope tomorrow is a little better for everyone.

Pity I can't join you for the retail therapy as I have to work all week. I might be able to sneak a few hours off on Friday so I can clean the house (sorry- delegate cleaning duties to the girls) in readiness for the onslaught at the weekend. Christmas has happened a little too fast for my liking this year. Need a few more weeks on prednisolone to prepare me yet!

Hoping you are getting into the mood for the season and can enjoy it pain-free.

Every Blessing

Love Judi xx

Although a few family members have fibromyalgia (me included), I'm the only one with PMR or any related auto-immune disease.  How did I get so lucky?  Maybe my sisters were right and I really was found under a cabbage leaf.

The only link I've found is what I read on another website:  "A higher prevalence of PMR is seen at higher latitudes and in Scandinavian countries and in U.S. communities having a strong Scandinavian ethnic background."  (Another site also included Northern Europeans.)

I've been wondering if PMR could be caused by stress.....plenty of that in the last few years.....but I thought I was taking such good care of myself.  Has anybody else noticed a connection between stress and the onset of PMR?

Hi Lyn, Thanks for asking.  The visit to the rheumy was uneventful. They checked all their boxes, then I went to the sin boats and left them a Christmas present.  It was fun though  Makes the trip something to look forward to.

Judy, I definitely believe stress triggers my PMR.  Last week I got really upset, and the next 4 days were terrible.  I've noticed the pattern with me.  Also, my PMR first occured two weeks after my husband died last year.

Well, girlfriends, this week is getting short.  We can't overdo it or we'll find more prednisone in our stockings.
