Hi everybody. I don't post much on here, but I read the message board a lot. I have ra and I wondered if anyone has ever had thrush in their mouth. And could it be from meds? Evei.         & nbsp;         & nbsp;         & nbsp;

Hi,

Yes I get thrush,  I am on MTX and even with folic acid I get mouth sores, every week which often develop into thrush, because of the prednisone and the advair inhaler. I usually develop thrush 1 or 2 days following the MTX.

What I do is rinse my mouth vigorously after using the inhaler. Every morning I use both biotene  mouthwash and  crest mouthwash. I change my toothbrush every week.

If I do get thrush I call my dr. and she phones in a prescription for an antifungal.  I also eat unsweetened plain yogurt with live cultures if the thrush is bad. I have been on MTX almost exactly a year, and have had thrush 5 times.

Its gross and nasty.

WHEN I WAS ON MTX AND FOLIC ACID I GOT HORRIBLE FEVER BLISTERS ALL OVER AND AROUND MY MOUTH AND I HAD NEVER HAD A FEVER BLISTER IN MY LIFE!!!  ALL I KNOW TO TELL YOU IS CALL YOUR RHEUMY.  I JUST USED ABREVA FOR MY FEVER BLISTERS  BUT FOR THRUSH THERE IS SOME TYPE OF MOUTHWASH  THAT'S RX IF I RECALL.   (cousin had thrush once)

I hesitate to blame it on the MTX simply because of my history with them. The sun causes them too and over the years I've been some what of a sun worshiper. I've gotten away from that in recent years but have learned to definately use chap stick with sunscreen. It's a must for me year round.

I know it's not the same things as thrush...but I thought I'd throw that in.

Hope your problem is cleared up soon and doesn't become a reoccuring one for you.

Back when I was first dx with RA, I was on mtx and prednisone.  I did get thrush then.  That's the only time I had trouble with it.  Doc put me on some tablets that I would just let dissolve in my mouth and that seemed to clear it up pretty quickly.  Haven't had any problems since being off the mtx and pred.

Thanks guys for all the advice. I see my rheumy tomorrow, Wed. So I will ask him about it again. I told him about it once before, and he looked in my mouth and said it looked fine then. I seem to only have it in the morning when I first get up. It's not sore and isn't blisters. It's just all this yucky white stuff on the inside of my mouth and tongue. I floss every night and brush and use Listerine mouth wash, so it's not that I'm not caring for my mouth. I am on a heart med, which the dentist said can screw up your salivery glands. Guess I should also ask the cardiologist. Thanks agin for the help. Evei.
