Do you have a metalic taste from meds? | Arthritis Information

Do any of you suffer from a metalic taste in your mouth? I noticed it after I started Arava. My Arava is doing such a good job that I will stay on it anyway. But I was wondering if any of your meds are giving you this problem? I also could be the prednisone. What do you think?

Interestingly enough I do...though it's not directly from the meds. When I was taking MTX, I would occasionally suffer an outbreak of thrush (Candida - fungus common in the mouth of babies). It was always preceded by a metallic taste...probably because the mouth "flora" was out of balance. Arava, I think, is similar to MTX. I had to take an anti-fungal drug for a while to clear it up. Now that I'm only taking Humira it happens much less frequently, and a strong mouthwash like Listerine seems to clear it up pretty quickly.

I have in the past. My dr. reccommended drinking Cola. It helps get rid
of the metal taste. Yeah Coke!

BeckyThanks Alan. I do use listerine everytime I brush. And my gums do not bleed. But this metallic taste is awful. And my mouth gets so dry that I am constantly drinking water. I have seen thrush and from what I remember you get a white coat in your mouth which I do not have. I will though, mention it to my doctor when I see him. Thanks for your information!Becky...I have done that too. Coke really helps! But how much Cola can one drink? :) Would chewing gum or having some mints help the metallic taste go away? Just in case this ever happens to me it would be good to know since I don't drink Coke lol. I am addicted to Crystal Light lol.Becky...Did your doctor say that the taste was from your meds? I am tasting it right now and it is awful. Thanks for your help!I never could figure out if it was the Arava or the pred but I did find that for me lemonade helped more than the coke or pepsi. I had this with MTX. It drove me crazy. I gained a lot of weight because I would eat to get the taste out of my mouth. Also, the MTX made me nauseated.

I think I've also had this taste with birth control pills too.

I have no idea what causes it, but I didnt' have thrush.

Good to know about drinking cola. I'd never heard of that solution.

I get a metallic taste that seems to be related to acid reflux. At least it goes away when I take acid reducers or cut back the meds causing the reflux.
