hip replacement questions | Arthritis Information

I had my hip replaced in June of 2003 and have had worsening groin pain since. Today, after a string of other docs, found myself at a physical medicine doctor who royally confused me! It was a relief that she admitted that this is not right and that I don't want to live the rest of my life like this, but everything she said totally went against everything my surgeon and all the other docs have said. She was appalled that I couldn't get my foot up on my knee, and that I couldn't cross my legs. I thought I was never supposed to cross my legs, but she said its fine after the first 3 months. She also said that she thinks something is wrong with the ball/socket that's causing the pain and preventing it from moving correctly, and all my other docs have said the replacement is fine-its muscular. Aghh. I have no idea who to believe!! Does anybody know about the leg crossing thing?? I sure can't wait till next week to talk to my PT...she's the one person I can totally trust!! Unfortunately she's gone on vacation right now!! Thanks in advance for any input!!

I had my hip replaced in June of 2004.  Other than some stiffness I have not had any pain.  I was told crossing my legs and bringing my foot up to my knee was not advisable (nor is it possible at least for me-I can cross my legs but don't and I can only bring my foot up to mid calf).  I would not push those 2 things as a gauge as to what is wrong but would push to find out why you are having pain.  That is not normal.  Did you do the at home exercises after your surgery?  If so maybe you could go back to them and try that out for a few months and see if that would relieve some of the pain (?)

Just some ideas.  Hope you find relief soon.

Yes...I did all my exercises and EVERYTHING I was supposed...or not supposed to:) I think that is one of the most frustrating parts. I am actually still in PT, b/c for 18 months now, b/c she's never been able to discharge me. Even the simple exercises I did post-surgery hurt like crazy. Thanks so much for the input.

I am so sorry this is happening to you. It sounds like there is deffenately something wrong.  Although I am not a doctor of course, I sure hope you can find out the cause soon.  18 months is too long to be in such pain !!

I had left hip rep[laced 1/15/04 . All went well . I think 3 mo. is what I wa s told too or LESS.Took mine a bout a yr till it got as good as it will get . Not like original but a heck of  alot better than old one was.Did you go to therapy after surgery to get muscles built up again ?

But the groin pain just don't sound quite right . Good luck
