My R.A. has recommended that I start taking Plaquenil.  Is anyone currently takes the drug and it so is it working.  Please let me know on how it is effecting your every day life.

I've been taking plaquenil for about 15 years.  That was the first drug prescribed to me.  On it's own, it didn't do anything for me and I eventually stopped taking it.  Went on MTX and then the MTX needed a bit of a boost and then added back the plaquenil.  Seemed to really help with the MTX.

Make sure you have your eyes checked regularly while taking plaquenil.

Good Luck!

CMELCHERT,

I was just diagnosed with RA back in December. I've been on Plaquenil for (2) weeks. So far it hasn't helped but that is to be expected as it takes 8 - 12 weeks to start noticing any benifit. I haven't had any side effects except for dizzyness. The dizzyness isn't like room spinning dizzyness but rather more like the dizzyness you would experience from drinking alcohol. Good luck and I hope the med works out for you.

Ta2d39093.5578703704It is the mildest drug of the dmards. It doesn't always help, but it rare for anyone to have a serious problem. Give it a try.

If you can manage on these weaker DMARDS it's a good sign that you'll manage well on less medication for a longer period of time. I guess it was about year 8 before I started MTX.....then I guess year 11 before I started Humira. It bought me a lot of time; which is not always on our side with RA. The more time you can buy the better!

Good Luck. Hope you have good results with it.

I started it in September and it has improved my morning rigormortis by
about 80 percent but I still have good and bad days. My RD wanted to add a
second drug at my 3 mo check but I was not willing to try a 2nd at that
point. I have also heard from various sources that it can stop working and
that worries me as I have no side effects except for a bit of hair falling out.
Give it an honest try. You will know in about 3 months. My RD also told me
that at 6 months, you are going to get as much benefit from this drug as
you are gonna get, that will be the best it will do for you, that is why I chose
to go three more months. good luck.

My sister is on it and is doing fine, I tried it many moons ago and it just did nothing, no help at all.

I have been taking it for 4.5 years.  For the first three years it worked great!!  I went into remission with no side effects.  Now I have had to add MTX and prednisone.I was diagnosed with RA in September and have been taking it for about 2 1/2 months.  So far I have not had any noticeable side effects.  I had been taking Prednisone and Mobic from time to time for flares, but for the past few weeks have been feeling good, have had very little pain and have not been using either the Mobic or steroids.  It takes about 3 months for the Plaquenil to fully kick in, so I hope this means that it will be effective.Wasn't on it  long enought to know if it helped. Took it for almost 2 months.  The only thing it did for me was to give me a rash.  Found out I was allergic to it.
