My left knee has been really sore for ages but it has been waking me up for the last few nights. it feels though it has locked into place and has dents in it. I have also noticed that when this happens I get little red dots on the knee cap. It feels like I have cotton wool inside( I cant bend the joint properly) and it looks swollen behind the knee cap. the pain also spreads down my calf into my toes. Has this happened to anyone else.Sounds like you have a baker's cyst. You need to see your doc. Elevate, heat, and stay off of it until then. If you have crutches, use them, try not to put any weight on that knee until you see your doc! Thanks Katie you re a huge wealth of knowledge, I will see the doctor on Monday. :-D You got lucky, as I actually have that issue. LoL Otherwise, I'd have been just as lost as you!!! Take very seriously what I said about not using your knee, if you have a brace, brace it. Since you say it hurts into your calf, you possibly run the risk of it bursting, and that is EXCRUCIATING. Hang in there!

Katie - We discussed baker's cysts and when I straighten my leg there is an obvious cyst that I can feel and it is shaped kinda of longer than wide.  When bending my knee it is hardly obvious.  Does that sound like a baker's cyst?  I will show my doc the 24th and there is incredible pain behind and in front of my knees but as I cannot work I get off of my feet a lot every day.  I also have synovial cysts on the front of my knees and on my ankles but nothing has burst yet.

Thanks for your help.

A Bakers Cyst is pretty much the same as a synovial cyst. Just, when you say "Bakers Cyst" its assumed that it's the knee. Make sense? Yes, it would seem that you have one as well. They're fairly common. Ask your doc! Thanks Katie and will show doc.

Good information concerning bakers cyst (synovial cyst). Mayo clinic also has an excellant inside/outside image of the cyst, just click to enlarge. I have had mine behind both knees. My right cyst used to, what I call, explode and go all down my leg. Looks like I have elephantitis of the leg when the cyst explodes. I cut down on taking as much glucosomine/condroitin after studying the mayo clinic image. The bakers cyst actually looks like an overflow tube for the synovial fluid. You can study the image and and make your own decision. Since I cut back on the glucosomine/condroitin/msm, I have not had an explosion. I still have the cysts, just not as tight or full if you will and not as painful. Sometimes it's such a pain being sick.
