used the duragesic pain patch?

I went to see my family doctor today and told him that none of the pain meds I've been given so far have done anything.  They either make me sick or put me to sleep, but none have done anything for the pain.  So he's suggested this duragesic pain patch.  I looked it up online once I got home and from what I've read, there seems to have been a few deaths from it.  Just curious if anyone has used this and what their experience has been.

The main reason I went to se my doctor today though was for my hand that's been numb and tingly since Christmas eve....non stop.  It's only my thumb, index and middle finger.  He's saying it's carpal tunnel syndrome and wants me to wear my wrist spint for the next few weeks....says sometimes that helps.  If not, then I'm to come back for a cortisone injection.  If that doesn't help then it'll be surgery.   I sure hope this wrist splint helps.

Shouldn't they do nerve conduction tests before diagnosing carpal tunnel?  They can't just tell by looking, can they?  Cortisone won't help carpal tunnel, will it, since it's a nerve disorder, and I thought cortisone was used for inflammation.

He said he was pretty sure that was what it was...but mentioned that if surgery was required, I would have to have the nerve conduction test done before they would do the surgery.

Good.  You'll love the nerve conductions.  Very weird.

I had the same thing in the same area of my hands, and they did the nerve conduction tests.  Turned out not to be carpal tunnel.  They said those fingers were influenced by the ulnar nerve (in the elbow.)  You'll have to let us know what you find out.

Is there any pain involved with the nerve conduction test?

Hi- Yes, I did use the Duragesic patch for a while. They worked ok on me for a little while but like most other things, not very long. But that's just me. A lot of things that work very well for most people don't help me at all. At the moment, I am taking methadone 4 times a day and morphine sulfate IR for breakthru pain, up to 4 times a day.

Everyone has different results from pain meds anyway. These patches have been a God-sent for a lot of people. Just give them a try and hopefully they will be the one that will help you. I really did like the idea of just putting it on my skin and not having to take  at least one of my pills. It is also supposed to be a very strong drug. They don't enter your stomach, so you shouldn't get sick, either.

There are side effects from all the drugs available to us. Just make an educated decision. That's really all we can do, to try to get a little relief from pain. Also, trusting your doctor is a big plus.

Best of luck. I hope you get some relief from your pain.

Many blessings,

Nini

No-no pain for me with nerve conduction tests.  They hook you up to probes, then send little charges and make your nerves move your fingers or limbs.  It's weird like when the doctor checks your reflexes, and things jump.  But doesn't hurt--just sort of surprises you.  Don't worry.Pinky and ring finger are influenced by the ulnar nerve, which is not associated with C.T. The rest of your fingers are. In kelstev's case, I would say the stakes are pretty high that its' C.T.

I use Lidicane patches. I'm not sure they are the same thing.....but I just use mine in one area of my shin where I have some nerve damage. They work for that; but for major joint pain I'm not so sure because I've never used them for that. I have used them on my back before and they help some.

People have died from eating them, right? I've heard of people trying to get high that way. You can only use so many at a time and for so many hours. Besides that I think their safer than regular pain meds....at least the kind I use are. BUT; I know there are some that are a lot stronger than what I use so this is probable something different.

Good Luck. I'd definately give them a try.

I have the lidocain patches also for my back.  Not a huge help, but takes a little of the edge off...a little.  Some people do really well with these though; again, depends on the injury, etc and what works for one, doesn't on the other.hi i had carpal tunnel surgery in 2004,  my dr suspected it but he had to comfirm it with an emg test. i don't know about the cortisone shot i thought that was for pain. i tried therapy but that did not work. i have seen other people wear the splints and they said it helped. make sure your dr do an emg to see the condition of your nerves and musclesTry OmegaXL, it helped me and many othre people. kelstev, duragesic patches are fentanyl in a form that absorbs through
fat. you put them on....a fatty area, not a bony one cuz they won't work
as well. they take about 10 to 12 hours to take effect and you change
them every 72 hours. some people alternate days and replace every 48
hours, lots of variations on when to put them on but generally they last
72 hours. one thing we watch is blood pressure. some people tend to be
a bit dizzy at first but adjust over time. they may work well as they are
not taken through your stomach so not as many side effects and are
metabolized differently. they are a nice smooth method of pain control
for many people. they are a very controlled substance. good luck and
keep me posted.Hi - have heard a pharmacist say that vitamin B complex together with vit. B6 will cure carpal tunnel syndrome.
Have no idea whether this is so but I would try it before surgery. I am sure there will be info somewhere on the net. B6 I have an idea sure be taken in no higher doses than 50mg a day & B vitamins need to be taken in the morning as they can hype you up at night.
The pharmacist was very confident about this so maybe worth a try.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Nini and Lorster...thanks for the info on the patches.  Much appreciated.

Cassandra...I'll look into vitB...thanks
