my capsules have 640 omega 3, but  310  epa and  210 dha.    Do i base the number of capsules i need on the omega 3 figure or the epa and dha?

also, once you have taken 3g of fish oil for 3 months, can you reduce to a maintenance dose?

The omega 3#.

DHA and EPA are just different types of omega 3.

"EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the two principal fatty acids found in fish. They belong to a family of essential nutrients known as omega-3 fatty acids. The body can manufacture both EPA and DHA from another essential fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) — found in flaxseed oil, canola oil, soy oil and walnut oil."

i found this

The usual dose is about three grams, or 3,000 milligrams (mg), total of EPA/DHA (the key ingredient in fish oil) per day. Be sure to check the labels: the capsules may say "1,000 mg of fish oil," but will have varying percentages of EPA and DHA. If they contain 300 mg, you’ll need to take 10 capsules a day. Look for high potency capsules so you don’t have to take so many.

So it looks like its the epa and dha that you have so count so i would need about 6 capsules.

Just out of curiosity, is this something you all are taking into consideration when deciding how much fish oil to take?

"Question: Can I take too much Omega-3?"

"Yes - you can take too much of anything. Fat intake should make up no more than 30% of one's total calorie intake. The recommended intake for polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6, is 5%-10% of one's total calories. Fats are a more concentrated energy source per gram than carbohydrates or protein; fats provide 9 calories per gram, while carbohydrates and protein provide 4 calories per gram.

Taking too much flaxseed oil can overload the liver with fats. The liver is responsible for breaking down and restructuring nutrients and excess fats can hinder the liver's filtering process. Normally, if you follow the recommended intake of no more than 30% of daily calories from fat you are within safe and healthy dosages.

Certain health conditions require adjusted levels of fat intake, you should check with your health professional when deciding the level of fat intake that works best for your personal health program"

I only bring it up because it says it can affect the liver, and we all know so do the drugs we are on for RA. It's something to keep in mind!! :)
