Wondering if I should phone my doctor. | Arthritis Information

I've only been on Prednisone for a little over 2 weeks now, but the first week I was on it was like a trip back in time. I felt 16 again and am convinced I could have run in a marathon. This week, I HURT in my hips, neck and shoulders. I can only walk 2 minutes on my treadmill before the "burning and grinding" begins in my hips. It nearly brings tears to my eyes it's so intense. My question is this: Should this be happening if the Prednisone dosage is adequate? I'm wondering if this is an indication that the dosage should be upped?

I would. I had to increase my prednisone.

Eeek! I was hoping to hear that this is normal...that perhaps I was having a "flare" that I read about on here. Was hoping deep down inside that everyone here would chime in and say this happens all the time and to continue as I am and things (pain) will subside without any changes. Oh my...always something.

I'm never totally pain free, but am not getting any worse. I'm at 6 mg, down from 20mg a year ago.  I think almost all of us still have pain even with the prednisone after the initial zap when diagnosed.  I was almost pain free for a short time, then it started to come back, but has never been nearly as bad as it was before treatment. As long as I can reduce and not get any worse, that seems to be the goal.  I would much rather have some pain and some prednisone than a higher dose of either.  I've never had to increase my prednisone, but many have.  I guess it depends on how bad it gets.  I always keep darvocet for occasional use.  It doesn't have such horrible side effects.  I wish you well.

I think this is just the way it is.  We learn to live with  it, and hope someday it will just mysteriously disappear.

Hi Spiders mom!

You didnīt mention the dose you started on. When I started on 20 mg 1 ― year ago, I could gladly walk 24 blocks and back when we visited Sacramento, Calif on July 4 and wanted to walk instead of taking the car - we wanted to celebrate with dinner and wine. They had told us that the motel we stayed at was near downtown and afterwards we thought they must have meant by car. When I reduced about 2.5 mg every 3-4 weeks everything was OK, but with the lower doses it is not possible to walk as I did the first week or so. Maybe you reduced too fast.
