Good morning all - after a rotten night.  I'm having trouble with insomnia since starting prednisone.  The dr. told me to take all 15 mg in one dose in the a.m. and I should be ok.  Well I go to sleep about midnight and wake between 2 and 3 and can't go back to sleep.  Are any of you having this problem and what do you do about it???  I take valium at night and it used to keep me sleeping for 7 hours.

Hi Jule!

When I got PMR in June 2005, my doctor told me that when starting on a fairly high dose of prednisone, I may need to take medicine against insomnia. I use Imovane (Zopiclone is an ingredient). It seems to be commercially available also in Canada but not in the USA but you can look for Zopiclone, I guess. Visit   http://www.drugs.com/cons/Imovane.html  The pred gives you a kick as if you are high, the doctor said. Now I just have Imovane as a precaution. If I donīt fall asleep within 30-60 min, I take half a pill but if it is very important for me to be fresh the nest day, I take a whole pill - although very seldom now.

Hi Jule, I've been on prednisone for a year.  Am down to 6 mg and still can't sleep very well.  3:00am is my time to wake also, and not be able to go back to sleep.Yes, yes........goes with the territory.
Awful.

Yep you have to plan for sleepless times, hard if u have to get up for work but if you don't I just figure what the heck different time to do different things.....like watching tv, taping early shows or daytime ones to watch at night, get caught up with your computer chores...mending etc. time waits for no man so you have to adjust to the situation,,,I also listen to walkman/cd player....Good luck but better than that and not so much pain.  I even bought some ear phones to watch late night TV shows so as not to wake anyone.  Relaxation tapes help.....Good luck    rose

I take trazodone to help me sleep.  50 mg is not quite enough, but 100 mg do the job.  I've always been able to get to sleep OK enought, but can't stay asleep.  I don't always take it on weekends, though.
