A Magical Moment…

We (Noe Valley Orchestra) played at a charity benefit concert this afternoon at a church in Pleasant Hill, CA.  It was a rather formal affair, with formal attire (black and white), and an older, very proper audience.  The music was all from the classical era, played with proper precision for the most part with an occasional crescendo and a flourish of 16th notes to get the heart beating a bit faster.  The audience was well educated and held their applause between movements.  They seemed to be having an altogether pleasant afternoon, offering encouraging applause at the end of each piece…very civilized and proper.  Very pleasant, perhaps a bit dull…   Then, a magical moment…a brief burst of spontaneity to break the somewhat overbearing properness of the whole affair.  A young girl, about five I think, managed to break free from her mother and began to dance down the center aisle.  She must be taking ballet lessons, as she was quite adept at twirling on her toes, keeping perfect rhythm with the music.  She seemed oblivious to the rest of the audience, her body flowing with the music, lost in her own world.  A few magical moments until her mother managed to capture her and return her to the proper world of adults and the respect due the great artists of the classical era.  Somehow I think Mozart would have been pleased with the young ballerina’s dance, inspired by notes composed over 200 years ago.  After all he was quite young when he wrote his masterpieces and not terribly proper when it came to social graces, even a bit vulgar perhaps.  Maybe she was the only one to truly hear the music, after all, how can you not dance to such beautiful sounds!  Yet, too often, as adults we must be refined and proper…and extinguish the exuberance of youth.  It reminded me a bit of the heart rending scene in “Schindler’s List” of the young girl in the red dress against a backdrop of black and white…a powerful reminder of the price of cruelty in our world.  But…I do over-dramatize…I would rather reflect on the magical moment…it left me with a smile!

Nothing to do with RA really…just a day when it didn’t matter…and life burst forth a little brighter than normal.

I hope you find peace and joy in your life,

Alan

It was a beautiful description. You always seem to add peace to this world. That is one of your gifts.

Alan, you have a way with words and music. That was wonderful.
