Urinary Tract Infection & Other End Probl | Arthritis Information

I wasnt sure if this topic had been discussed before but are we prone to urinary tract infections?  I'm trying to recover from one and not having much success. It came on all of a sudden with the onset of constipation, hemorroids and then a week of diarrhea. Now, I'm constipated again, fever and the UTI is not getting any better after a week of an antibiotic. Of course my RA Dr. told me to get off all of the arthritis medicine (metho. and mobic), so you know I'm beginning to ache of course. Being on metho. lowers your immune system, so I know it will take a while to cure this, but for how long?  I will call my general Dr. tomorrow. Just wanted to get some feedback from the crowd on this.

Thanks... -Mimernote in Florida

well, I frequently get UTI's, well I use to.. I never took anti-biotics tho, because at the time I didnt have a doctor. I just drank a WHOLE lot of water. I mean I swear I musta been drinking water all day long, water and green tea and it would go away in a couple of days. Im sorry your not feeling well  I hope you get better soon! Mimer,  That sounds miserable.  I hope you get relief soon.  I never get UTI's and I pray, now that I am on mtx., I still do not get them !  I hope someone on here has some good advice for you.

Antibiotic's cleared all mine up with in about 7 days...but often they have returned.

I have RA and I take MTX & Humira, but this didn't really become a problem until I started Humira. Mine might be what they considered mild cases; because my doctor didn't request I discontinue my meds. (Sure didn't feel mild; it's horrible!!)

I hope you feel better soon...I know what you're going through.

Mimer, I was on MTX and got an infection.  You usually have to come off MTX, take a round of antibiotics and once they verify your healthy again, start back the MTX.  You can have a bladder infection but kidney infection is more serious.   Hope you feel better soon dear!

You could try drinking loads of cranberry juice.  It's good for cystitis and I think it has the same effect on UTI's.  Problem is, you have to drink loads of the stuff (unsweetened) and you end up sloshing round all day.  Does seem to clear it up though (I think it has something to do with altering the pH).  Good luck!

I've also taken cranberry juice in a pill form. I can't remember what it's called now; but you'll find it in the drug store (In the Female section) close to the medications for yeast infections and such.

Gives you the same effects as drinking lots of cranberry juice regularlly.

I had one UTI while taking MTX and that was last December and I ended up in the Emergency RM.  None since, although I always have my fingers crossed that I don't have another re-occurance. They didn't take me off MTX or Azulfidine either.  Just gave me some very nasty antibiotics and sent me on my way... Green tea is good and so is cranberry juice, if you can handle the taste.  Also heard that Yogurt is good  for UTI's ..

Hang in there, you will be feeling well soon...Take some time to relax, that also helps you with your bodies ability to fight infections...

Thanks everyone for your comments.  I would love to drink the cranberry juice and yogurt, but because I have other end problems, I have to stay on the BRAT diet (banana, rice, apples and toast). I'm living off of chicken noodle and rice soups. It's getting better, it's just taking a while. You gave me good advice, especially the one that said to relax and take it easy. That seems to be hard for me to do. But, I'm getting back to the gym and actually did some water aerobics today. It's just a reminder of how fragile our bodies are when on metho.  I had a burn on my hand and a blister on my other hand that took longer than usual to heal.... Those are the breaks... But, at least I'm back at work now after being out for 4 days.

Thanks again folks....I'm getting better each day.
