Can someone please give advice. My 72 year old dad has Ulcerative colitis. Was put on prednisone and before being put on Purinethol (6mp) he was tested for tb. To our surprise test came back positive. Xray showed latent tb which he probably has had for over 30 years. Gastro and lung doc agreed that he should begin Isoniazid, taper off the pred and start taking the Purinethol(6mp) since his colitis was out of control. First of all both these drugs could cause liver problems and together there is a higher chance. Secondly couldn't the immunsuppresent(6mp) couse the latent tb to activate? Both doctors told him it was safe to take together . Also he's complaining of depression. I'm wondering if it's the tapering of the prednisone or the 6mp or could it be from the isoniazid. Didn't think anyone else would be in this situation where one has to take bad med for tb as well as one for the colitis. Please should he be on both at same time??
