OTC diuretic?? | Arthritis Information

I've been on prednisone for 2 months now and am taking 15mg for the past 10 days.  Myface has ballooned up and I'm getting swelling in my ankles.  I don't want to add anymore rx drugs but need to get rid of this tight facial bloat.  Do you know if an otc diuretic or natural one might help??  Anxiously waiting to hear from you.

Hi Jule

As far as I am aware the bloating is not oedema (which can be treated with diuretics) but as I was told it is the redistribution of fat.  I am on diuretics and it hasn't made the slightest difference to me.  The only relief I have from all this "bloating" was to come down below 10mg prednisolone. The last couple of weeks has taken the fat deposit from around my throat way so now when I lie doe=wn in bed I don't feela sif I am choking. Having said that my GP has put me back up to 15mg as I am having a mega relapse. Just hope someday I can get off this horrible med.

Biochemically using an OTC diuretic without GP consent may not be a good idea. You already have sodium, chromium and calcium depletion with prednisolone: with the added diurectic you compound the salts balance (fuzzy eyes and cramps aremy current symptoms). I have to take the diuretic for hypertension so I am careful to eat bananas and green vegetables, as well taking a chromium supplement.

Sorry there is no quick fix, otherwise the docs would prescribe yet another drug. Maybe a diuretic may help you but talk to your GP first.

Love Judi xx
