Information On The New Prescription Drug Plans
Posted on: 01/02/07

Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, spurred by the favorable response to its generic prescriptions, has moved quickly to lower the price of roughly 143 medications to for a 30-day supply at 2,500 Wal-Mart stores in 26 states, as of late October, 2006.

These programs could have significant implications given the number of blockbuster drugs losing patent protection in 2006-2007 and the pressure to lower drug prices for seniors, the disabled and the under-insured.

Thanks Deanna, Hubby and I have already taken advantage of this offer.  It's marvelous!  I am surprised that other pharmacies have not joined in, but Walmart & Sam's buy in such high quantities that it would be difficult to compete with them.  We also purchase all of our other scripts at WalMart at great savings.  Love it... They will give you a list at the pharmacy window as well, we have one and we've checked on it to see if there was a different med a doc could give us. It works out very well!!!!

Target is also doing this, and our local grocery store which has a pharmacy in it is too!  And some of the drugs vary, so if you can't get your medication at one place for the low price, you might be able to at a different store.

This is a great trend and I think to survive the oher chains such as CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid are going to have to follow suit!

A yay for the consumer for once!

I hate to be the voice of doom and gloom, but Wal-Mart is not just "being nice". They have their own motives, which are likely profit and control of the market. I would imagine that no one can compete with their pharmacy prices for long. That means they will put everyone else out of business. Then I guess they will be able to charge whatever they like and will have control of one of the largest industries and our health too. It scares the you-know-what outta me that I may have to depend on Wal-Mart for that. I haven't taken advantage of the cheap prescriptions. It may seem stupid to pay for something you could get for , but I like my hometown pharmacist and would hate to not have that choice any longer.

CVS and Walgreens are refusing to match this on the basis that is such a small percentage of prescriptions. I think there's probably enough competition in most places for Walmart not to gain that kind of control. Where it is going to hurt is small towns where Walmart already steals so many local businesses.

I use Target because I love my pharmacy team. They are a wonderful group.

But your concerns are valid.

Thanks Deanna. I'm all for capitalism, but Walmart just keeps getting more control over our economy. I guess it frightens me quite a bit. I hope they continue to have competition.

I have one problem with it. I always get generics and before they went to the RX's... my pred was only .88 and now it is . That kinda erked me. I was a little upset about it. But hubby was like "WOW! A whole 12 cents increase... that is really going to break the bank." He was being sarcastic and had a fake shocked look on his face. It made me erked at him for acting like that about it.

Anyways... I am thinking of changing pharmacies AGAIN! I think to the new one that just opened up down the road from Freak-Mart.
