Lately I have been having some problems holding eating utensils.  I couldn't find any stores in this area that sold the easy grip/built up handled utensils.  I found some online, but most were from sites in the US (I'm in Canada) so I thought that I'd continue looking around and possibly go into a larger city nearby.

Yesterday, my husband and I were in a dollar store putting in time before picking up my daughter from work.  I was in one aisle and he was in another and when I went to go find him, I saw him looking at cooking utensils.  He told me he had an idea for my eating utensil problem.  We bought a few of the cooking utensils and when we got home, he went to work on them.

Here's what he made for me.  First pic is of one of the cooking utensils next to a fork that he had already made for me.  He just took off the big black plastic spoon and put in a fork..then put some silicone in around the fork to stiffen it up.  Second pic is the finished set.

Not sure why they look gold in the picture..the eating utensils are silver...might be the lights above the table.  Anyway..this only cost .00  (.00 for each cooking utensil to be transformed into an eating utensil)

So I thought I would post these pics for anyone that might want to try this.  The handles we were able to find are a nice firm rubber, so it feels nice in the hands and of course the main thing is that they are thick enough for me to be able to get a nice grip on them.

What a great idea!  I'm so not creative like that!

Thanks for posting

Lori

PS, you should patent those

Like Wow!  Your husband has what it takes to be an entrepreneur!!  Also, showed your post to my other half (husband)
and he's going to put together a set for me cuz recently my hands have begun having good days and bad days.

I used to work with disabled children, most of whom couldn't grip eating utensils.  Of course the commercially made equipment is sooo expensive.  We struck onto the idea of using bike handle grips (from kidsize bike handles).  They were brightly coloured and rubbery, very inexpensive from the bike shop.  Great results - just slide the utensils in, those with fattish handles, and away we went.

Since I got lumbered with our old friend, I found that the squared off metal handles on my household doors were cold and sharp on my fingers, so slid one of those on - presto!!   (Actually, first of all I slid on some old spongy hair-rollers, that worked but looked a bit odd).

So I tried the bike grips and now everyone admires my funky shocking pink door handles!!

Your hubby is obviously a very thoughtful and caring man!!

Very cool table wear!

"necessity is the mother of invention"

Oh my god!! School House Rock had a SONG all about that. Hahahahahaha Now it's stuck in my head!! *dances*

Those are awesome spoons/forks/etc. You really SHOULD get them patented. Just don't sell them for TOO much, cause dang it we're poor. LOL
Wonderful. And what a loving man, can you get a patent on him as well. That is really cool and they look quite handsome. Thanks for sharing it. Really, you might have a market for that especially in Canada. What a brilliant idea.  I'm going to set hubby to work right away cause my hands are what cause me the most grief at the moment.  Maybe I'll be like a big girl and be able to cut my own food.

Thanks for the nice comments.

There might be a few people here that wouldn't be able to make these...or maybe they don't have a husband to make them...so my husband has offered to make a few sets for anyone who would benefit from having something like this.

PM me if you're interested. There would be no cost to anyone.

I just think that was so sweet of him to do that for you! I agree with Deanna, I think he might be the one in need of a patent...

Wow, thats so great!, your hubby is wonderful to offer to do that for others.  I have been having so many problems with my hands lately, thats why i went to my doc in the first place, and now shes thinking its not my fibro its RA, going for some tests this week to be sure.

Thanks so much for the idea, now if only i could find away to do buttons and snaps for my kids i wouldnt feel so worthless!!!!  They know they cant ask mommy to help them get dressed in the mornings (they are 6 and 9) in fact often times i have to ask my daughter to do buttons for me!

OH OH OH OH!@!!!

You could do this to a TOOTHBRUSH TOO!!!

(I'm proud of myself, can you tell?)

we actually just did that todayLMAO yay!!!!! I sent the idea to you TELE-PATHETIC-LY.haha

That's a fabulous idea!!

It's also very nice of your husband to offer to help anyone that might need it. What a generous man. You're very lucky!

Please let him know how much is offer is appreciated.

Wow, Kelly, great idea and great hubby!!!Bumped as a complimentary discussion to this >>Topic: Beautifully Designed Equipment . . .<<  Great idea!!!!Again, great.Wow, those are great...your husband is very talented!

That is a great idea, and kudos to your hubby Kelly for thinking of it.  But seeing this old thread reminds me of some of our old friends who left AI.  Sure do miss them!

Hi Kelly, please give your hubby a big pat on the back for being so inventive and kind to offer his help to us on here, what a lovely man?  I have beeen using rubber hose type material from Bunnings warehouse that just slips over handles, I must say though yours look a lot prettier and I wouldn't be embarrassed to use them!!!!!!  Congrats, you have solved a problem for many of us I am sure!  That is why I love this forum, this is the way we like using it and why we come here in the first place.  HUgs Janie. Thanks!  My husband sure has been a huge help to me...he's always coming up with different ideas to make things easier for me.

Ditto Hillhoney on the old members. Although we have met new ones too that is nice also.

Kel, after all this time since the original post, are you still using them and do you find them comfortable?

They are VERY comfortable! And still being used Great Idea
Oh Kel I have been having troubel with hanging onto to things too lately, seems as though my hands just refuse to work properly anymore.

The surgeries I had were necessary and thanks to my hand surgeon we found the RA but it doesn;t help when you are constantly dropping stuff...it is so discouraging.

Looks like you have help in problem solving all this, thanks for sharing!

JodeYou have a wonderful husband! And yes, I used to work with the disabled community and went to many conferences and there are many catalogues with such utensils but they are so very expensive! Kudos to you Kel for sharing this...you are such a lovely person! Geesh I miss chatting with you!

JodeThanks, Jode
