Do r.a. meds cause gas? | Arthritis Information

OK-- silly-sounding question but sincere issue...  does anyone besides me believe their mtx/enbrel is the culprit for causing intestinal gas?  It seems that theproblem started about the same time I was dx. My teenage son thinks its hilarious, but its caused me some pretty real embarassment when I've been outside our home.... My husband even put Beano in my Christmas stocking! (unfortunately, it doesn't seem to do anything).  Does anyone else have this issue, is it the meds that cause it, and what works to prevent it?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Yes, some of the meds can be the culprit - I didn't quite 'wake up' to this fact until there was a discussion on one of the boards about Celebrex - it seems to be the culprit for me tho I take mtx as well (not Enbrel).

Lorrie-- thx for reply.  Have you found anything that is effective at curbing it?  I cannot cut back on the fiber in my diet, as I have slow digestive tract and suffer from constipation on a regular basis, so must have high fiber just to keep regular.

It's not as bad now as it used to be.  helps if one eats normally, and doesn't gulp food (and some air) while eating quickly or on the run. Also some foods such as beans generate gas.  I can't remember all the culprit foods.  Also, some people might be more affected than others.  Have you mentioned anythng to your doc, or even the pharmacy - they might be able to suggest something to help.

This webpage from the National Institute of Health has a good list of gassy foods and coping tips . . .
