Howdy,

Anyone notice any worsening of their eyesight with RA?

I was dx'd in August and am now on  25 mg MTX injections + naprosyn.  I've been noticing since the fall how it's becoming increasingly difficult to read things up close.

So, the question is ... is it aging (I'll be 39 - for the first time - this year), is it MTX, is it naprosyn or is it RA??

Probably aging, but with RA and its accompanying drug cocktail, I tend to want to blame RA for everything!  :)

Thanks,

- J.

I would suggest an eye exam to rule out needing a prescription but otherwise, autoimmune illness are known to cause dry eyes.  As the cornea dries out, it causes distortion in your vision.  The best otc drops for this is called Systane.  You can get them at any drug store-I use them about 3 times a day and it really helps!

Thanks!  That's really interesting!

I was 40 when I first needed glasses to read.  I remember the optometrist told me that forty is about the time when most ppl start to need glasses to read.

Definitely get you checks checked by an opthamologist as well. Sjogren's (dry eyes) is common with RA. RA itself causes eye inflammation. And, prednisone can cause both Glaucoma and Cataracts. Plaquenil can cause problems with colors.

Regular eye exams are essential. If you have dry eyes, it does cause blurriness but is easily treated.

And, yes, it could be age related so the optician still needs to be seen.

What you are describing seems like typical eye site problems that come with age. How old are you?

My opthamologist told me that forty was the magic number when it becomes difficult to read.

And, right on schedule, when I turned forty I started having difficulty reading up close.Dear Joy - some stuff is not caused by RA! Don't fight it the progressive no line bifocals are just great - and they keep your age a secret.

Thanks everyone ... now if one of these DMARDS could also be an anti-aging remidy  ... joy, i was 37 when i had to go to reading glasses and a very mild
prescription. My eye doctor told me at the time that he usually sees this
happen around early 40's for most people. I do strongly feel that the RA has
had something to do with it. I also have noticed a decrease in my night
vision, things seem very pale at night. If I forget my glasses and I sometime
do, I cannot read a menu or labels at the grocery store so they are a must
for me. I HATE GETTING OLD

I do have dry eye which is associated with Sjogren's; but that's different. Although I have blurred vision at times from this, it's not the same as what's causing my reading difficulties.

Ive started with fish oil (there  are lots of previous posts on theis on this board)  and one of the things i've read is that it's good for dry eyes as well as joints .... perhaps you should take a look at this for your eyes as well.     best wishes, anna london I started with bifocals at early 20s. Trifocals by 30s. It was necessary because of occupation as an artist. Those progressive lenses are great and you cannot see the lines.
