Ok, I know this is not RA related but I feel that it is affecting my health.
Like a fool, I decided that I needed a change from my nursing unit here
and decided to take a 13 week travel nurse job to another town to work. I
have to work 3 shifts a week, for 13 weeks, then it is over. Well, I am so
stressed out right now over it, that I am physically sick. This job is
horrible. I cannot keep up. I got off work Sunday night with a fever, sore
throat, and cough. They tell me that I cannot get out of this contract
without legal ramifications. I have to go back this Thursday and work 3
nights in a row. I feel that my licence is in danger due to their staffing
issues (of course, that is why they have travelers is because they are so
short), i just never imagiined it could be this bad and this unsafe. It
makes my old job here in my hometown seem like a trip to disneyland.
My question is...Can I get my doctor to excuse me from this because it is
affecting my health? I told my husband on the way home Sunday that I
was praying that I slip on the ice and break a leg this week to get me out
of going back, that is how bad it is. Have any of you ever been in a pickle
like this with your RA and employment? Thanks, I feel better already.No advice for you Lorster...just wanted to say how sorry I am that you're in a situation like this.  I hope you find some way around it.Your dr may be able to help you out of this. Rather than giving these clowns the RA excuse - which they can use against you by spreading around you don't want to work and use it for an excuse - making it hard to get hired. You might just tell them what the real problem is - so short staffed its both abusive to you and dangerous for patients. Let them know you will NOT be assigned to situations like that in the future. Whatever agency over sees this stuff could be informed. You know make them change the job so it suits you!Well I was being unrealistic when I thought that working at another hospital,
on a "clean" surgical unit (away from pediatrics) would help me not come
down with so much that I was exposed to (kids don't tend to cover their
mouths when they cough, lol). When I got there, I didn't think about what
the change (new job) was going to do to my stress level. Since RA, I don't
feel that I can handle change as much as I used to. So, I got thrown into this
unit that has nothing but problems, high acuity, low staff numbers and
super fast paced. I will never complain about my old job again and will be
going back there as soon as this nighmare is over. I just wish I had forseen
what this new job was going to do to me physically before I signed on the
dotted line. I'm calling it the TOUR TO HELL AND BACK 2007.

Hello!  Sorry you are going thru this right now.  Your post scares me for many reasons.  I, too, am changing jobs soon.  I am SO bored in my current job that I absolutely HATE going to work.  But, I'm scared that a busier floor will cause problems.  I am taking great care to chose my schedule carefully and I dropped to 4 days a week (32 hrs).  I hope this isn't me posting in a few weeks.

If it comes down to it, your doctor should be able to write you a medical and or "mental health" excuse. As an MD, he should be understanding of both your medical hx and the impact that short-staffing has on patients.  Best regards, PatWhat kind of legal ramifications?  I've heard of agencies threatening this before.  I doubt they would go to all the trouble and money to hire legal council to nail you.  Nobody can make you do things you don't want to do.  Call in sick if necessary.  Especially if it's not safe.  No way would I put my license on the line for these clowns.  Just make sure you document your concerns in case you need to write an important letter later.I had no idea until I got to this unit that they were 9 nurses short which
equates to about 2 short per shift. The night shift RN had 13 patients. I
could not believe it. She also had an aide and a LPN for meds. I had 7 on
days with a LPN to help me. There were 14 patients, 2 RN, 1 LPN and 1 aide.
These are neuro surgical patients. We had 5 TPN's going. I don't think I will
be able to handle 13 patients and am not willing to risk my licence.
Emmasa01, I guess they can sue me for all the money they put into me prior
to hiring me and I'm not sure how much that would end up being. But it
could be into the thousands. I think a broken bone is the only way out, lol.
Would anyone here like to volumteer. I won't watch My only salvation is
that my husband is traveling down on weekends with me so that makes it
less stressful for some reason. Anyway, thank you for listening. It helps to
vent.
