I got woke up at 8am this morning by my oldest sister, she was calling to inform me that our mom was sick or rather sicker. She has been having a really hard time getting enough oxygen she is only getting like 93% of oxygen and her doctor wanted to admit her to the hospital because she was like 1% from when the hospitalize people and she told him no that she would try the pred. Her doctor in Dec gave her a nebulizer to use 2 times a day, now he has bumped it up to 3 times a day. Now he put her on a week long course of prednisone which he started her out at 60mg for 3 days and then 40 for 3 days and so on and so on until done. Well... my mommy has diabetes and she took her first course of pred and she felt good was able to breathe and all and then a few hours later she said she felt funny. So she went and tested her blood sugar and it was 450. She said she was shocked and did not know why it shot up like that, so she took an extra 8cc's of insulin and the next day she went to the doctor and he told her it was from the pred. So now her insulin is bumped up until she is done with the pred.

She goes back tomorrow to see if her oxygen percentage has gone up and if it has she will not be admitted to the hospital, but if it the same or lower they will admit her to the hospital.

I asked her if they knew what was causing her to not breathe right and she said something about a slanted lung? Never heard of it and she did not know what it was.

My oldest sister is staying the night with her tonight and her friend from church is taking her to the doctor in the morning as my sister has to work in the morning.

Hope your mother gets better soon Joonie, must be a worry for you.
Best wishes, joonie, I know you are very close to your mom. It sounds like they are keeping a very close watch on her. I've never heard of a slanted lung. I hope that they get this under control quickly with a solution that gets her off the pred. My thoughts are with you.

Joonie, it's so scary when our moms are sick. We can feel so helpless. I imagine it's a little like the feeling you have when your own kids are very sick.

We'll be thinking about you.

Joonie, im so sorry to hear you mom is having a hard time right now.  I will keep her and your family in my prayers.  Let us know how she is feeling.I don't think that there is such a thing as a slanted lung but she could have COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Does she have a history of smoking or asthma? She could have some atelectasis going on. Prednisone is a good medicine and a bad one. It's not good for diabetics as it does cause hyperglycemia. She should have some regular insulin on hand while taking the pred and use a sliding scale to accomadate the elevated blood sugars. I hope it all resolves soon for her. Best of luck. Sorry Joonie, I hope your mom gets better soon.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies.

My mommy is doing better. When I made this post I meant Poor mommy as in she now knows what is means to be on pred and then she is on a higher dose than I have ever been on. Most for me was 24 I think from pred dose pak. She got to experience what I go thru while on pred.

Anyways... she is doing better. She is in the hospital right now. They admitted her because her BP was up and she still was not getting enough oxygen.

Doctor said her lungs were flared from asthma, which she really has not been DXed with, but has had an inhaler for years now. So I guess she has asthma. Her coughing sounds much better; it is not congested sounding like it was before and she seems like she even feels better, but ready to get out of the hospital and go home.

So hopefully she will get to go home Sunday, but her doctor said he wants her completely better before he releases her.

Thanks for the prayers and replies

She is 72, so it is a wise decision to make sure she more than well before releasing her. She sounds upbeat and like her normal self.

She said she would stay until she got better. I told her being in the hospital was better than being on "death row"-- which is what we refer to the old foogie apartments she lives in -- because she gets 3 meals a day served to her on a platter, no house cleaning, and gets to lay around all day and not have to feel guilty about it.

I know how close you are to your mommy Joonie.  I wish her a quick recovery.
