Prednisone and Sleeplessness? | Arthritis Information

Share

Dear folks, Thankful for prednisone (no pain and less swelling after taking 3 X 5's per day), but has anyone experienced sleeplessness from taking prednisone?

YES.  I'm not a sleeper anyway, but on 15 mg. of Prednisone and it has definitely added to my issue.  Although I'm not happy about that, I do enjoy being able to move.

I make sure I only get my caffeine in the morning (coffee) and I'm done with it by 4:00 a.m......just drink water the rest of the day and an occasional diet caffeine free tonic.

I've tried reading, no tv, etc. etc........  So I guess I'll live with it.

What have you tried?

good morning! Not much, I'm just happy to be pain free for 5 days. It seems like I don't sleep at night, but probably do. I take a lovely nap in the afternoon (2 hours of bliss) so I add that to my 'sleep time'. No caffiene, except in the morning. Thanks for writing.Hurts, Prednisone Yes you can get some sleepness nights. I was taking 30 mg a day. I took 20mg morning before work which is at 4:00 am. and take 10mg at 4:pm. But now they dropped it to 10mg in morning and 10mg. in afternoon. I am starting to feel alot of pain in my hands and very tired.

Angel, I have the same problems with the doctors disagreeing on meds. The Primary sends you to the specialist who recommends something counter to the doctor or vice versa. I see lots of specialists and they are always changing things. I wish my Primary would step up to the plate more and help me sort it out better. That's where you instincts and your own research can be the best protection. If they strongly disagree, then insist they call and talk to each other and then get back to you. But no one should be mad at you for following the instructions of another doctor when you are trying to comply. Gee whiz--been there, done that repeatedly. Know how you feel.

Angel57, thankx for writing. Sometimes I can't sort out the 'meds' from whatever else is going on in my body. I was sweating so much at night it would wake me up when I took 15 all at once (5 pm) which is my worst time from 5pm-5AM. Now, I take 2 in the morning, and 1 at night, but I think i need more of it. I'm gettting stiffness before I can take the a m dose. Just keep on -keeping on! hurting less and hearing from everyone and reading about what you are all going through has helped a lot! (Since Feb 9th, I've been writing)I had sleeplessness with even smallish dosages, so I can see where a bigger dose would really cause that.

I can't take prednisone... it causes depression and anxiety for me, but it sure does help the joints!
thanks for all the support as I thought it was just me.

It definately is not just you. Pred can really 'take ya for a spin'. I find it almost impossible to sleep on 10mg or more per day. I'm grateful that I only use it in nasty situations and not a daily thing, because I really can't handle it.

It sure is a wonder drug at fixing a flare.

Yes and I have horrible insomia.  Sometimes I can't sleep for days.

So, the doctor placed me on a sleep aid for those times.

But,

Sleeplessness is a side effect.

I don't get it.  We need proper sleep to heal our bodies and we need to keep our weight unde control to ease the ware and tear on our joints... THEN DOCTORS put us on meds that keep us from sleeping and make us gain weight.

MAN...is it me or is there a CON SPIRCY going on....

Anyways... I have such a hard time going to sleep even on just 5mg of pred. I have a lot of sleeplessness because of it. I take it before I go to bed in the wee morning hours between 1-3am, so I can move and actually get out of the bed to tend to my son.

I mostly lay awake at night thinking and thinking and thinking. Let it be thinking of food that is sitting in the kitchen calling my name, if my hubby and daughter will get to their destinations in the morning and return home safely, if everyone is still breathing, all the house cleaning I need to do but do not know if I can do.

The only thing I have found that kinda helps me to go to sleep... is to take my Tylenol PM around 7 or 8 pm and I will usually fall asleep around 11pm, and then hubby will wake me up when he comes to bed to give me my meds, then I fall right back to sleep, because pred has not had a chance to kick in to keep me awake. I do not take the Tylenol PM too much as hubby usually will not let me sleep long before he "accidentally" wakes me up.
