Thyroid Problems? | Arthritis Information

But all the meds, the inactivity, especially pred set you up for weight gain. Since hypothroidism often accompanies FM, you want to get this checked as well and it will fatten you up quite nicely.

This triggered my interest. I suffer with FM and PA, and have had a sore throat for a month now. I went to the doc, and he gave me antibiotics. Nothing got any better of course. I have read a little about auto immune thyroiditis.

Could this be my problem since i keep putting on weight? I only had a short course of prednisone quite a few months ago. Could i have a medication or PA induced thyroid problem? Should i do anything about it or just put up with the sore throat. I hesitate in asking the doc if i have yet another 'problem'! It seems every time i go i get another to add to the list!

People can have more than one autoimmune disease.  I've had RA for 2 1/2 years, but I've had Hypothyroidism for about 10.  I gained a lot before I found out what was going on.  For a long time, I kept putting off going to the doctor because I thought, "well, I'm getting older...".  I wished I had gone a lot sooner.

I don't think one short couse of prednisone would cause the weight gain.  Just tell your doctor you seem to be gaining weight without changing your eating habits.  A TSH test is inexpensive and so is the medication.

I've had a sore throat for a weeks and weeks too. A doctor just suggested I gt my thyroid checked too. I've gained weight, etc.  Hmmmm

I'm defintely getting the thyroid checked!

I have hypothyroidism, ra, pa and oa!!!  Yes you can have more then one form of autoimmune disorders.  Also if the hypothyroidism is not kept under control it can cause your forms of arthritis to flare up, make your joints ache etc.   Even if you are just on the border of hypothyroidism this can still cause problems, you may have to be forceful with the dr to put you on meds for it.  Alot of drs. don't want to prescribe the meds if you are borderline.  You can also ask your dr to send you to an endo specialist and get their opinion too.  meme

Then I went to an Eye, Ear Nose and Throat doctor and he immediately felt my thyroid and said it was enlarged.  He sent me for a thyroid scan, and  an ultrasound, which proved I had thyroiditis.

You know your body and you are the best judge of what is normal or abnormal.  Pain is the body's way telling us that something is going on.  Listen to your body and give it the help it needs!

I am lucky my endo and my rd are husband and wife they work out of the same office too!!!  There are endo and rd that do work together because they are now seeing many of their patients having problems in both areasSo maybe you will get lucky like me and find a combo of drs to wrok with you.  meme

Hello,

Hashimoto's here too, but I have lived many years with it before RA "happened" and it was a one pill a day thing. Very easy. Isnt always easy for everyone, but for me it wasn't a huge problem after they dx'd it. I would sure have it checked! I was doing the same things. having the same symptoms, gaining weight, that low sore throat thing. Hypothyroidism can really mess up your game plan in treating your other problems if it goes unnoticed. I sure know how you feel though. Seems I am a collector of dx's too. I didn't want any of 'em sheesh! I'm tired of getting new ones every 15 minutes (it seems)too...grr

Wow! Thanks everyone. I had no idea there was a specialist in this area. Well at least i get to go out again, to the doctors! Grrrrrrr And i had no idea thyroid problems could make the arthritis pains flare up! I bet that's why i'm not responding to my meds! I have put on about 10kg in a year. I gave up smoking exactly one year ago next week, and expected to put on weight, but it just keeps on coming
Just read the last post of Hillhoney.

For me my dx was strictly by accident and purely by chance because my sore throat and the small lump my allergist found when examining me physically prompted him to order a number of tests. He then consulted with an endocrinologist and more tests were ordered. My tests indicated zero thyroid hormone in my body and answered all the questions I had been asking my gp with for month and months and months before.

To make a long story short I required a  thyroidectomy because it was CANCER.

Had I realized then what I realize now in that it isn't wise to totally put your health care in the hands of your doctor nor accept without question a doctor's dx for only you know how you feel.

Ok, I'm scared now, I don't think i will put off getting it checked out. My rheumetologist appointment is 8th March. And lately it takes a week to see the local Dr, so i guess i will try both of them on the subject. There is a definite sore spot to touch near my adam's apple area, and it hurts to touch, swallowing aggravates the lump rather than the wind pipe. Although i can't see or feel a lump.
Hmmmmm worried now.
It is so true with doctors. They are like a mechanic, they can guess the problem, but only get to the root of the problem when they get in there and have a look.
