Ear-jaw pain and buzzing in ears | Arthritis Information

Has anyone ever had such inflamed TMJ that their ears started to almost buzz, and words were almost whistling back in their ears?  All my joints were really sore, and then I realized every word my son said to me ended in a whistling sound!  I was horrified!  It sounded like I had the ocean in my ear.  I guessed that my jaw joints must be really inflamed, and my rheumy prescribed prednisone for me, although it seemed as if she had not heard of this happening before.  Has anyone ever experienced this before?  I've been on the prednisone for two days, and it is helping, although the pain in my ear is not completely gone.  I'm still wondering if I should go to an ENT--I guess if it's not completely gone by Monday, I may go.  When my RA first started, I had this pain in my ear.  Has anyone else had ear pain from their jaw joint?

I have trouble with inflammation in my TMJ. Sometimes I can barely open my mouth and have to be careful what I eat. My ears ring all the time, sometimes it can get really loud. The ear ringing was caused by medications I have taken over the years for RA, its a permanent thing. Inflammation can cause some fluid to accumulate in the inner ear and taking prednisone will take care of the inflammation. I have yawned a few times and thought my jaw was dislocated because it really hurt and was locked temporarily. When my ear hurts I try to be very careful until it subsides. I've had this off and on for many years now and I've gotten used to it. Hope this helps, knowing you're not alone.
