MTX (no folic that day)? | Arthritis Information

I read somewhere on the day you take MTX, don't take your folic acid? Who knows more about this? I've taken it for years and didn't know this!!I always took my folic acid on the same day as MTX.  I took 2mg daily and 5mg of leucovorin 12 hours after the MTX dose.  I think its one of those things that there is no hard and fast rules about.  In many European countries folic acid is notroutinely prescribed at all.  Only when side effects appear does it get prescribed

No folic acid on MTX day.  Thats what all my DRs tell me.

Hi,

I was told not to take the folic acid on MTX day as it's not worth it because the MTX depletes the folic acid so much. I take 5mg every other day of the week though. I have heard that there is some discussion around the fact that the folic acid can affect the absorbtion of the MTX but my Dr wasn't sure when I asked. In any case he says (and all the Pharmacists I have had my prescription dispensed by agreed) that accepted practice in the UK is not to take the folic acid on MTX day.

Maybe you could ask your Dr about it and tell us what they say?

KT

5mg of folic acid 48 hours after mtx and just once a week for me. I'm told taking it sooner would reduce the effect of the mtx. There seems to be so many schools of thought on this. My rheumy said doctors in other fields (sorry, I can't remember which) say taking folic acid in RA treatment is pointless. It would be good to have a universal yay or nay and how much.

I take it everyday.....but I took MTX without any folic acid for a couple of years.

I think some doctors disagree on things; but if I was you I'd stay with what you are doing verses changing anything due to what you've read.

I take 5 mg folic acid everyday, including the day I take my mtx.

My Folic Acid dosage is 5 mg, each day, EXCEPT the day I take my MTX and also the day before that.  Folic Acid also helps prevent the mouth ulcers (I think you call them mouth sores) that can develop with MTX, and I'm also told prevention of hair loss.

Hope that springtime and the warmer weather will soon shine on  those of you in the Northern Hemisphere.

Interesting!  I always took mine the same day.  It is strange how much the advice can vary. Yes, very interesting.  I take mine every day but only 1mg.  What a difference in Dr's opinions. Thanks for all the info,I'll call my doc Monday and ask what he has said to me, either he didn't or I forgotttt! That's possible.I was told to take 1 mg. every day...  I like to see what others are doing, but I'll go along with my doctor unless I've read something that could be harmful.I was told not to take it on Mthx day but after reading all the positing on this site, people were taking on Mthx day--so I take it everyday now.  I have not experienced any difference.  I was experiencing hair loss and figured it might help.  My dr. has let me play with my Mthx.  I felt I was taking too much and he said start taking a bit less and I will know if that is ok.  If I need the higher amount--go back to it.  If it works with a lessor amount, then go with the lessor amount.  My hands and ankles started hurting again--I am now taking what he prescribed.  I think it proved his point but I feel in control.  My rheumatologist told me the folic acid can interfere with or affect the mtx. For the full benefits of mtx and folic acid, take folic acid every day except mtx day. I take mine every day.My hair is falling out, not hugely, but more than usual. MTX has done this before. Dang ((my doc says 'well, yours will grow back)

hurts-

ask your dr to prescribe Leucovorin Calcium along with the folic acid.  It will help with the hair.  Also--buy some hair thickener.

Every day except MTX day for me. I find if i don't take it i get more reactions to the MTX. I researched and found it is nigh impossible to overdose on Folic Acid. Tho only reason not to take it on MTX day is coz it will be wiped out.
