??? about dental appt. | Arthritis Information

This morning I went to the dentist and got a crown prep done and a cavity
filled. Tonight, I feel sick. All my teeth have a constant ache to them and
my whole head hurts. I feel like I have the flu. I've never had this happen
after a dentist appt. Does anyone here have this happen after a dentist
appt? I don't know if it is related to that or if I'm starting into a flare. Can a
dental appt cause a flare? Thanks all

My PRA started with dental work.  I wish I knew then what I know now.  If I were you I'd STOP everything with that dentist and go find a biologic one NOW.  There are things they can do that will help - like using dental dams so you don't swallow things and make yourself sicker.  They are hard to find - but I managed to find one in a cornfield.  :-)  Try a google search.  If that doesn't work try the ADA in your state (my state had no idea what I was talking about).

Dental work releases a lot of bacteria into your body. That's why someone like me with a heart murmer must have antibiotics before any dental work or surgery. Since you are already reacting, I would take every precaution including calling the dentist and your Rheumy to see if getting on an antibiotic might be a good idea. And Pip gave you some very good recommendations which I've never heard before that are available.Ugh....I think getting a crown triggered my RA. Regardless, it's a traumatic experience. I feel for you. Sorry I can't be more helpful. I woke up this morning and can hardly open my mouth, still feel sick. I was
fine until the appontment. I didn't think about bacteria. That never crossed
my mind. I was thinking it was because I held my mouth open for so long.
This is such a bummer. Something you think you are doing to keep healthy
is making you sicker. I had rheumatic fever as a child. I will be asking my
dentist and rheumy about this as I may request an antibiotic before each
appt. I had never heard of a biological dentist but am going to look into that
also...but I love my dentist. I know she is open to making sure I don't
become sick. Maybe it will prevent me from feeling like I do right now.
Thanks for your advice.Sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. I can understand you not wanting to change your dentist as its so hard to find a good one who understands. Hope you feel better soon.

Since I knew part of the start of my disease was dental work (I believe we can have multiple causes that the body cannot fight off at the same time) I decided to be extra careful in my mouth.

I also am supposed to take ABX before dental work - I may not have this last time as I was running late and didn't want to reschedule.  Then PRA.  Hmmmmmm.

I have just had all my amalgams removed because of recent press reports on it.  I read that the panel looking into the problems with amalgams stood up to the FDA and refused to say there was no link.  Good enough for me.  The biologic dentist told me about the connections to cavitations and AI disease etc.  While I don't feel any better, there were people in the dentists office who did and swore by it.  I DO have a whiter smile.  LOL  My regular dentist knew of this biologic dentist and told me to see him as there were too many reports that improperly doing dental work can cause bad AI reactions.

Again - biologic dentists are hard to find, but all the other dentist's know who they are.  Hmmmmm.  My periodontist insinuated that this biologic dentist was about to have his license pulled by the state.  He wasn't.  It seemed to me the periodontist didn't want me to go see this other dentist.  And, since starting AP - my incurable periodontal disease is a thing of the past.  Hmmmm.
