HI all

please help me out here...i ahve been diagnosed with RA for a couple of months now.....we dont have a rheumatologist in Fiji but my doc has given me Celecoxib (100mg) after taking VOltaran(75mg) which was causing stomach problems

all these medication are NSAIDS......

Should i be taking DMARDS....im 26 ..planning to have my first baby by the end of this year at least....

greatful for all your advice

Are you pregnant now or hope to be? That may be why the dr hasn't given you DMARDs. Perhaps your RA is very mild??That would be a question to clarify with your doctor.  Does he know you are working on getting pregnant?  Every study shows that early DMARD treatment is essential in preventing damage but pending pregnancy is a reason to postpone.  However you need to be monitered closely during this time..how often are you seeing your doctor

i see my doc once a month but if i fell better than one in tweo months.

yes doc is aware that i want to conceive, probably thats why she hasnt given me DMARDS.

will confrim that today though........

but i serisuoly dont want to be more prone to disabilty therefre i will ask doc to prescribe me DMARDS straight after.

some good ones are????????????

The most commonly prescribed starting DMARD is methotrexate.  It can be quite effective (...it was for me).  Some people don't tolerate it very well and have to move on to other drugs.

how long have you been taking this and dosage?

side effects?

But you difinatly can not get pregnant while on mtx---it will seriously harm the feotus.

Ashu~I take MTX and have had excellent results.....but I went into early menopause after taking it for a year. Luckily for me I had already had all the children I wanted; but had I not it would be too late. It's now been more than 4 years and I continue to take MTX. 25mg a week and it is a great medication for me.

Definately do not start MTX if you intend to have a baby. It could likely ruin your chances all together. It's rarely that this can happen....but it's certainly not unheard of.

My advice would be to have a baby ASAP and then move forward with a DMARD treatment as soon as possible after the baby is born. A large number of RA patients do not have any RA smyptoms at all during pregnacy.
