cracking sounds in knee | Arthritis Information

hi guys, within the last couple of weeks ive been noticing my right knee making constant cracking sounds.

about a year and a half ago I had them both drained and shot with prednisone.

currently I feel no pain in the knee, and wonder if I could have deteriorated joint without experiencing pain or swelling.

any suggestions? Im kind of panicing about this because the thought of a joint contracture, or surgery needed in THIS joint, truely frightens me at my age.

Hiya,

Both my knees crack and crunch horrendously. I daren't kneel or squat as when I do the crunch and pain explodes. they then give way and I can't get up again. I mentioned it to both my rheumy and GP and they reassuring said it was nothing to worry about!

Mention it to your doctors - I hope you get a better response I did!

have them x'rayed next time you see the dr.  Crepitus that is damaging usually hurts so hopefully yhe noise you are hearing is just the tendons/ligaments moving over the joint

My rheumy said only to be concerned if the cracking is painful.  It is painful in one ankle so it was x-rayed this past Monday and I get the results this Monday.  My knees and ankles crack all of the time.  I agree with telling your Dr and having x-rays.

Good luck.

thanks guys, i will be sure so call my rheumy about it, but you guys have eased the anxiety knowing im not alone dear sophistblack, are you taking all of those medications you list? My gosh, something should be helping your knees, don't you think? This is a mystery to me but it must be strange to hear your knees cracking when you walk. Please let us know what you find out! Good luck, Hurtinglessyeah im on all of these meds.. its so baffling to me as well
im just devastated
i know that its out of my hands, but I wonder if I am getting the proper treatment.
My right knee started cracking when I was about 9 or 10. It's done it ever since, and no one's ever given me a straight answer as to why. This is the same knee that gets all the wonderful baker's cysts and swells before any other joint, for longer and much much more.  I've had multiple MRIs and X-rays of that knee, and it's always the same thing. Yes, theres damage, no it's not fast. It's INCREDIBLY slow. So I don't know.

If you get a definitive answer, PLEASE do shed light on the cracking and popping thing. I'm so curious!

Bonny - they always told me that too. (about the painful cracking) and mine is about a 50/50 shot on if it's gonna be painful. And yes, I've told them. I get the same answer.

Sometimes when I crack mine, it hurts for DAYS. Sometimes, it actually feels better. I cracked it last night actually, and I could still scream from it today. This is one of those bad ones. Bleh.
