Sulpher Veggies?? | Arthritis Information

I had a consultation with a "diet"doctor last week. He was giving me suggestions on foods to eat to stay on my new restricted calorie diet. When I told him I had RA, he told me to eat primarilly sulpher veggies. Cauliflower, Broccolli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage and Garlic.

I have never heard this before. Do you think he's a quack.

I just got done roasting a head of cauliflower and a bunch of brussel sprouts. YUM

I eat that kind of stuff all the time, because I love that family of vegetables!---I don't know if it helps though. However, I wanted to post because I have a current recipe I enjoy.

Steam some brussel sprouts
Heat olive oil and add finely chopped pecans until browned
Add brussel sprouts and stir until heated through

Yum!
Also, those vegetables are thought to be anticarcinogous. I like reading about food and here is a site (The World's Healthiest Foods) I find incredibly helpful
http://www.whfoods.com/foodstoc.php it may not help your RA but there is lots of good stuff in those foods Gimpy that recipe sounds wonderful.   Do you half the brussel sprouts or heat them whole?Yeah lots of good stuff, but watch out on how MUCH of them you're eating. All the ones you've listed can be hard on the lining of your stomach and intestines (ya just can't win, can ya?) LOL If you have IBS or GERD you already know that though. Just......don't go overkill on them, that's all! :)

This may not apply to you, but thought I'd mention it. I've been told to avoid cabbage, because it slows thyroid function. Since I have hypothyroid, I avoid this food. If you have normal thyroid function, then no worries. The foods you listed do sound good.

I think I am correct in saying that sulphur is one of the ingredients in  MSM that is used to treat RA naturally so there may be something in it.

Cassie

Cassie, I was just about to say that too, yes MSM is a naturally occurring sulphur I am sure - I eat loads of those veggies - good to make soups out of them as they are easier to digest and it breaks the boredom - get ready to blow the bed covers off with the windypoos though - my husband says it is grounds for divorce   Oo flint - soups - thats a GREAT idea! Much easier on the tummy! I do them whole but I guess you could cut them in half if you wanted to. Also, I add some salt. Mmmmmmm....salt. Tsk tsk tsk gimpy! Salt!! That's so unhealthy. LOL You know RA patients are more prone to heart problems. And you know salt doesn't help heart problems. *shakes a finger* Watch that salt shaker!!!

That could have been Crunchy....she's all about the awesome soup recipes........I'll tell her to check this post.
