NOW WHAT!?! | Arthritis Information

Yesterday I was in my Rhuemys exam room going over meds with his nurse. I was chewing gum and managed to inhale spit - down the wrong pipe  - chocking thing.

I coughed really hard - drew tears to my eyes and then was kinda OK. After I'd gone home I started to have pain between my shoulder blades. I hurt everytime I inhaled - the bigger the breath the more pain. When I 1st laid down the pain got really intense (like a headache when you 1st lay down or get up - hurts worse).

I was better this morning but I'm still hurting.

Now what did I do to myself? Do you thing I broke or ripped something? Anybody else manage to hurt themselves with a really hard cough?Hi there,
No, I haven't. It's possible you've pulled a muscle. But, maybe a
phone call or app't to your doctor is in order if it doesn't go away
soon.
Hope you're feeling better.

Marian,

Sorry to say but you may have even fractured a bone. Even in healthy situations, bone fractures have happened by a hard cough. Hope not.

Marian hubby went to the ER one time for severe pain and it turned out that he severly pulled a muscle while coughing.  Maybe get back to your Dr or PCP?[QUOTE=levlarry]

I know that can happen. More likely to have strained/sprained something - I didn't hear a pop or a crack

Marian, we obviously cannot leave you alone with your own body. Actually, sorry to hear you hurt yourself. Maybe you should call. Our poor rib cages do take a beating from our meds. I know that they told me that people have fractured their rib cages during Pulmonary Function Tests which is just basically breathing and coughing.

You might have just bruised it. I guess you're just going to have to rely on your instincts as what to do. But I have no doubts that it hurts.

Marian, You could have pulled a muscle, or even torn some cartiledge or fractured a rib.

The gum came out, didn't it? Is there any chance you inhaled it? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but that's the first thing that popped into my head when I finished your post. Forgive me for sounding like a dork

Hope you feel better, but if you don't soon, I'd call your doctor.

Hugs,

Nini

I've hurt my back and ribs coughing before and it was horrible!

I've been hearing so much lately about folks fracturing bones and not realizing it had even happened. If you've got osteopenia or osteoporosis that's very likely to happen.

Not sure of all your history M~but seems like you have had RA a long time....and it's like you have these conditions as well. I'd give it a little time and see if it eases up and then call your doctor if it doesn't.

Hope you're feeling better soon sweetie. Hang in there.
