pregnancy stopping enbrel | Arthritis Information

Hi!, I'm new to this board.  I've had RA for 10 yrs now.  Was on metho. and plaqunil for the past 5 years and completely under control.  In Aug 04 i went off them because i would like to have a bady.  All symptoms flared by oct. 04  I went through Several months of pain and severe flares. 11 cortisone injections later, stomach problems from high doses of anti inflam.  Once i switch Rhumatologist  i started enbrel in April 05. I worked great and fast.

I just took a home pregnancy test and it is +.  I'm happy and scared.  I was advised i should go off the enbrel when i became pregnant.  Just wanted to know it anyone has gone through this.  Any information about similar experiences with going off it or staying on would be greatly appreciated.  I just got use to feeling normal again and am worry about flares up if i go off.

Hi Sherry....CONGRATULATIONS!!! That's wonderful news.

Welcome to our group; we're glad to have you.

Check back through some of the old post here. It shouldn't be too hard to find. We have another girl here that is preg. and continues to take Enbrel at her OB & RD's advise. It's going very well for her. I'm sorry....I can't think right off what her name is, but later when I have time I'll help put you in touch with her. She doesn't check in too often though...but she'll be back.

Again; welcome to the group.

Lovie

Mandy is her name Sherry.

If you scroll up to the top of the page and click on Member's list, you'll be able to reveiw all of her past post. She's definately on Enbrel and expecting.

You might even want to send her a PM because I'm not sure she's around much and this way she'll be sure to know that you're here when she checks in.

I stopped Enbrel when I became pregnant. The rheumy and dr. both did
research and while there aren't any concrete problems that could be
caused by the enbrel...we felt that the drug was also very new and it was
not worth the risk. The only med. I stayed on was prednisone. The main
side effect with the pred. was the risk of a pre-term delivery. Well, my son
was 6 weeks early but he is perfectly fine.

Congratulations to you...you are in for a wild ride that only gets crazier
on "birthday". I love every minute..

Becky

I think I'd agree with Becky and her doctors too...not enough is known about Enbrel and the effects on an unborn child.

If you could manage without it that would probable be my first choice as well.

Thanks for the support.

It's so helpful to hear others who have been or are going through the same thing.   I'm gong to talk with my Rheumy on Monday, and probably stop the enbrel then. I'm slightly worried becasue i've only been feeling good for 2 months and really don't want the pain to come back.  But of course a healthy baby is the most important thing to me.

Becky were you taking predisone all the way through your pregnancy and did you go into remission in the 2nd trimester??  I know the information you get from different dr's varies.  I've heard of an increased risk of cleft lip or palate with prednisone in the 1st trimester. Were you worried about this.

It seems like so long ago-allthough Nathan is only 20 months old. I
KNOW that I took it 2nd and 3rd. My RA never went into remission. But..I
was also under alot of stress with aggrivates it. The pred. might also
have been one reason why Nathan was so healthy as a premie. The dr.
said they will often give steriods to boost the baby's lungs. I did have
contractions super early..July. Nathan was Due in Dec. and was born on
Oct. 30th. I don't know how much the pred. had to do with this. I was
early, my sister was early, and her son was early. It runs through my
family. The ob. told me to mark 30 weeks on my calender as my goal.
This was due to history...not meds. My ob also admitted to not knowing
much about RA drugs but man did she do research. She sent me this
whole packet and her notes. Plus-she was in contact with my Rheumy.
They were both awesome.

Let me know what you decide. Also..feel free to ask any questions during
the pregnancy.

Becky

I took pred while pregnant. I was not really on pred before I was pregnant. I stopped all my meds when I thought I was pregnant. At that time I was on Celebrex and pred. I told my OB/GYN that I thought I might need some thing for my RA since it was bothering me, and he told me to wait until my next visit to see if I could go without. He eventually just put me on 5mg of pred thru out my pregnancy. But I did not take it everyday.

My OB/GYN said pred was the safest med one could take during pregnancy for RA, becuase it did not cross the placenta.

I did not have my son too early only about 10 days early his older sister was 2 weeks early. I do not think the pred causes early delivery.

And my son is a very healthy and semi-happy baby (takes after his daddy the happy part anyways...lol).

I'm sorry I am so late on this...I somehow missed it.  Congrats Sherry on the pregnancy.
Here is a post I answered sometime back on pregnancy, meds.
http://www.arthritisinsight.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=32 &KW=pregnancy%2C

It has a listing of meds and what's considered ok and what is a must not take.
I have recently seen something about Enbrel and pregnancy but cannot remember where I saw it or what it was.  I'll look some more.
hugs, wayney
