Handbrake & automatic transmissions | Arthritis Information

I just heard you don't have to put the emergency handbrake on hard if you have an automatic transmission UNLESS you are on a hill or steep incline. You stop, put your foot on the brake, pull on the handbrake a bit, then put it into PARK, then turn off the key. (I have no idea what ORDER I used to do this in, but this will save your transmission). I ask that whoever has driven the car before me not put the 'king kong' grip on the brake!!

You don't have to put the emergency hand break on *at all* if you have an automatic trans - unless you are on an incline. That's exactly right. It's not that it "saves" your tranny, it's just not necessary. *shrugs* arriscolwell39166.8584953704Trouble is everyone but me does a king kong on the hand brake! Nice advice though. Thanks. I drive a manual transmission car.  Well, when I can drive.  Stupid foot lol.  I know with my car the emergency brake line will snap if you beat the heck out of your emergency brake.  Then you don't have one and don't park on a hill!!!  Always turn your manual transmission car wheels into the curb on a hill!!!  Just in case you roll forward lol.  And park in gear.  Neutral and hills do not get along!!!

All of us should have power brakes and steering and automatic trans. I know it is more fun to drive a stick but not when your knee gets stuck!

I didn't realize til I made the switch just how much using the shifter was hurting my right wrist.

I rarely use the hand brake. I just put my car in park and turn the wheels toward the curb. I avoid parking on inclines ... too much fighting with that big old heavy door.

Yeah yeah yeah...everyone keeps telling me to give up my manual tranny car.  But but but Mooooooooooooooom!!!!  It's fast!!!!!!!  Sigh.  It is coming to that point where I need an automatic tranny car.  Sigh.
