Has anyone had this? | Arthritis Information

I call this place my medical encyclopedia.

I have what they call TMJ or Temporo-Mandibular Joint.  My doc said that it could be arthritis in my jaw. Of course I googled it and found many causes, one was spending too much time on the computer via the mouse.  And even poor posture can cause it!  Has anyone had this and what did you do for it.  He said that heat is good and also naprosyn.  It is better than it was, but I am not anxious for a return visit.
I had the jaw pain really bad years ago that it was hard to open my mouth to eat. It went away in about two months and never returned. Knock on wood;it is aobuthe only pain that didn't return! I jsut endured it - nothing seemed to help.

I have always had TMJ, wore a mouthpiece made by my dentist for awhile and it helped tremendously. It comes and goes..I chew a lot of gum so that is part of my prob.

Not sure what computer time and a mouse have to do with TMJ though, maybe I misread it.

I have TMJ and mine gets aggravated when I spend a long time on the desktop computer, because I tend to lean my head on my hand - that messes up my jaw!  I remind myself not to do it, sit up straight, and within 5 minutes I am doing it again!

When I use my laptop I obviously don't have that problem!  Maybe you just need a laptop!  Think you could get a doctor to write a presciption for a new laptop?  LOL

TMJ.

From being on the computer.

Seriously? That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard. LOL I aggrivate it when I chew gum! Heeeheee but I do it anyway. :(

TMJ since I was a kid. I, too, wore a mouth guard and it helped a
whole bunch.

I don't get the computer connection, either. That's odd....

It's not the computer, it's the way I sit at the computer, LOL!  I have my elbow on the desk, and my chin resting in my hand while I surf.  That kinda pushes my jaw back a bit and puts pressure on the joint and it gets sore and hurts and I get headaches.  Anyway, it's a me being me problem - as most of my problems are, LOL.

I also have problems if I fall asleep sitting up in a chair, and my mouth hangs open.  Lovely thought isn't it?  The pull of gravity on my jaw makes it sore.

Okay there you have it, even further proof I am a peculiar one!

Ewwwww LMAO I just pictured gobs of drool rolling out of your gaping mouth. Aren't I sweet?

I don't know what causes mine, I don't really DO anything to do. I actually don't chew that much gum - once in a blue moon. Sometimes I have a hard time making it through a MEAL. :(

OH OH I KNOW WHY!! Oooohh I'm smart. Because, the RA stunted the growth of my bottom jaw, so its AS IF someone were pushing on my bottom jaw all the time......ooooo Karen. We're so alike...HAHAHAH 'cept my hand is invisibly pushing my jaw. Cause I'm super ghost special. Haha

This is my google it find.

Overuse of my hand on the side where I had TMJ was another contributing factor. I had TMJ on the side where I used a computer mouse for hours at a time. I think the tightness caused from gripping the mouse all day tightened my muscles on that side of my body and contributed to my TMJ pain and fibromyalgia. My TMJ pain also developed after I had kids and spent a lot of time pushing baby strollers, so I think that was another contributing factor. I have two sons close in age, so when they were little I had two babies to take care of at one time. I would push both of them around in a very heavy, double stroller. I think the gripping and pushing action from pushing the stroller around tightened my hand and shoulder muscles and also contributed to my TMJ.

Seriously?!?!?!?

Wow. I dunno. I'm just having a hard time seenig the connection. I mean. Hands is hands and jaws is jaws. LOL Though, I don't know a whole lot about how the muscles connect, so anythings a possibility.

Couldn't it also just be that RA sucks? LOL That ones such an easy way out....

I also have TMJ.  Definitely, get a mouthguard to wear at night.  Helps so much.  I didn't think it could possibly make a difference.  Boy, was I wrong.  Now, when I feel my jaw starting to hurt, I just pop in the guard at night and it stops the pain.

I got TMJ following expensive dental work. The dr put in a bridge, but because my teeth are so weird, they don't line up right, etc, he could never get my 'bite' right!, so for years I suffered with TMJ, then the bridge fell out (don't ask me how), and the jaw pain disappeared. Dentist have a fit when they see this big hole in my mouth, but I never had one put back in!
