Does music really soothe the savage beast?  Does anyone get relief and relaxation from music?

Definitely Yes!!!

But for me it is more than listening to good music...I have played guitar and bass since I was 13 and it is my one true passion in life.  That's why I am so scared with this disease that I will not be able to play one day.  I always said my greatest fear was to not have the use of my hands.

Gramma forgot to add that if you are not a fan of classical music, some nice n easy guitar IS great.  I like Earl Klugh - John Williams - there are many many choices.  Importantly, for me, is that there are no lyrics.  Too distracting for wallowing!!

New Age type of relaxation music great as well/

Perhaps Ghost Hunter and Alan would have some good recommendations for guitar music for you.

Take care
Oh h*ll yeah!! On my way to work, I have to attempt to be calm and ready - cause work is *always* insanity in the summer. So I rock out HARD. Anything upbeat and "summery" :) Puts me in a GREAT mood.

I am a die hard music lover...everything from classical to even some rap.  I grew up playing classical piano (can't anymore...I can't reach an octave anymore lol), guitar, and flute.  I am a HUGE Evanescence fan.  I mean HUGE lol.  I will load up the MP3 player with all of my Evanescence ( I have music that isn't on their albums too) and lay on the couch and just zone out.  There are times I even forget about pain, ra, meds, stiffness, what will tomorrow bring, etc. and just immerse myself.  I also sing and that relaxes me too.  Altho I have found for some weird reason since I have started the Lyrica it has affected my voice.  Makes me sound husky and my vocal cords feel tight. I have ZERO range.

Coping with pain and RA and life sometimes is so stressful.  I just wanted to share one way that I cope and sometimes forget I am who I am with the disease I have.

I love playing my mandolin.  It really sucks the stress out of me.  I play with a small classical orchestra in San Francisco...and I play in a church worship band.  Fortunately my hands are OK now, though I went through a period a couple of years ago when it was very painful to play.  I enjoy listening to music but playing is a truly spiritual experience.

Alan

I like most kinds of music but my favourite since I was 16 (that was a few years ago) is jazz.   I love Sarah
Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald (saw her live at a concert in London in the late 60s & it was magical.)
I also like Billie Holliday if I am in a mellow mood. Lately I have enjoyed Rod Stewart's Great American Songbook CDs & DVDs
and think he is still a great old rocker. Maggie May would still get me up and dancing - if I could!   Jazz and a glass of wine are my favourite ways of relaxing.

OMG you got to see Ella Fitzgerald!!!  I am sooooooooooooo jealous!!!  How cool is that!!!

I also love the blues.  I love B.B. King, Johnny Lee Hooker, and I am nuts about Stevie Ray Vaughn.  These guys could make a guitar sing and talk to you....not just have noise come of out of it.

I love nothing better than to listen to Kenny G . I love the sax, it is sooooooooo relaxing, a nice bubble bath, glass of dispersable co-codamal

For relaxing and snoozing in the afternoon just some Hillsong music or other gospel/Christian music on low in the background.  If it is too loud I just want to sing and that defeats the purpose of snooze music!

great topic!  Thanks!

Okay so, for those of you who like soothing music without words....(not nessecarily classical, but close) Listen to *anything* Clint Mansel has composed. ARGH! AWESOME! LOVE IT!

As most of you know i LOVE music and put so many things to song LOL..Yesterday i think i got some dirty looks because of it, i was driving my dads Vibe and for a factory sounds system its pretty darn good. Well.. i was BLASTING Spice girls..Why? cause i could and i wanted to get a reaction.  Its the song "tell me whatcha want what ya really really want" and it kept reminding me of that one commercial where the husband puts it in his car and follows his wife while shes running

So back to my thought

OHH and i love Neil Diamond!!!! SWWWWEEET CAROLINE!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh that song reminds me of my father.  I can remember we'd all be out for a sunday drive.  My parents in the front and kids in the backseat.  My father would be singing that song to my mother.  Her name is Rosalie so of course he'd be singing "Sweet Rosalie" and us kids would be giggling in the back seat

Neil Diamond is awesome!  SO i talked to my friend about tkts to tim mcgraw and he is gonna see what he can do YAY

I guess I don't really like music to soothe me, per se.  I want it to pump me up!  I'm a 48 year old woman driving a minivan, blasting good old fashioned rock n roll!  Roll downs the windows and let it rip!  I don't care how sad and pathetic I look, I love it.

I enjoy a variety of types of music and have been fortunate enough to go to many concerts in my life.  B.B. King, The Doobies, Lonestar, Chicago, The Beach Boys, Charlie Daniels, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Reba McIntyre, Linda Eder, Tom Jones, Bobby Vinton, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson (amazing), Dolly Parton, Patti LuPone, Lucinda Williams, and quite a few others, BUT

None of them compared to the concert I went to this past September.  It was a freezing cold night, windy, and we were in the nosebleed section of Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. I was shaking and shivering, but I didn't care!  My kids had given my hubby and I the best tickets they could afford to see The Rolling Stones!  It was literally a "life moment" as Oprah calls it!  I had waited and wished and dreamed for as long as I could remember to see The Stones, and my three amazing kids made it happen for me.  And now, whenever I hear one of their songs on the radio, it takes me right back there to those precious moments!  It still brings tears to my eyes as I type this, what my amazing children did for my husband and I.

So yeah, music does a lot for me!

Ok, heres a question for you since your a ROlling stone fan.. do you like the beatles?

Yes I like the Beatles and have tremendous respect for the sounds they created and the genius of Lennon and McCartney in particular. They changed music forever!   I like a lot of their music, the early stuff, and even some of the middle eastern sounds Harrison brought in later on, but not like I like the sounds of The Stones.

WOW, i dont think ive ever "met"someone that liked both, everyone ive talked to have either liked one or the other..

you are truly unique Now I am not wanting to brag - in fact I have done about 2 really exciting things in my life. One was going to an Ella Fitzgerald concert and the other was to sit in the front row at a Beatles concert - with George on one side and Paul on the other. My friend and I went to the airport to see them arrive and her photo was in the paper 'screaming' - it reappears in the paper on reunions of Beatle tours but she is now an old respectable lady (well my age) and gets mortified in case anyone recognises her.   I watch the tribute to George Harrison concert on DVD at times and it brings back so many memories, I just love it as George was always my favourite.   I was a Stones fan too but the Beatles just had that slight edge for me.
Music can bring back so many great memories.

I use music to calm me, relax me and pump me out.  I use it to block out out the background noise at work.  I would be lost without it.

My favorite band (I do love and listen to different music) is Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.  Listen to their music on the way to church every Sunday...gets me ready to deal with the teens.  I attend as many of their shows as I possibly can.
