Concentration | Arthritis Information

Do others have serious problems with short term memory loss.   I have the concentration span of a gnat these days and while I know this can happen with RA it is getting worrying. I have always been good at spelling but now when I look at a word when I have posted I just cannot remember if that is how it is spelt but when I think about it later or reread it then I realise the mistake I have made.   I also leave words out or letters out of words. When does loss of RA memory stop and Alzheimers start?
I am also finding it hard to even concentrate on reading a book.   I go to the library, get books out and take them back unread.   All my life I have been an avid reader and am really missing not reading books.
Anyone else experience this?

Cassandra,

This is getting to be a big problem for me. But I started taking a drug called Topamax a few weeks ago and apparantly this is one of the side effects. I mean, not being able to spell a common word. I was typing a letter to my son the other day and I was trying to type "would" and I kept typing "whould". I couldn't remember if the "h" belonged there or not. It's scary. I've had problems for awhile, but this is getting rediculous. RA, med's, and menopause do not mix!

I leave out letters in words and also leave words out. I also place words in the wrong order. You are not the only one that does this.  I feel that sometimes we just have this brain fog from the pain and inflammation and the million and one meds we have to keep track of plus keeping track of the million and one things daily life throws at us.

I have learned to proof read everything before I post or email.

The brain fog I have is thick as soup!!!

Plus.....read the bottle on some of em'......MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS!!

I'm sorry...........what were we talking about? I cannot remember if I posted, I cannot rememer if I ate, I cannot remember if I took my pills on and on.  I have fibro, maybe that is it, I take pain meds - maybe that is it, I have RA - maybe that is it - I had a stroke - maybe that is it.  The worse is Did I pay that bill???????? What was the question????? roxy39181.6753125I, too, have memory troubles.  I have a hard time getting to sleep at night and so I often revert back to my Catholic background and silently recite the Lord's Prayer and Hail Mary to keep my mind from wandering.  There have been numerous times when I am half-way through a prayer and cannot remember what comes next.  I have been saying these prayers for 45 years!!  I do crosswords and sudoku daily to exercise my brain and find I sometimes replace letter with a number and vice versa.  I'll go to write a number and for some reason my hand makes a letter instead!!  This all started for me before the meds (except amitriptyline which I've been taking for 16 years) so I suspect it is the RA.

You can add me to the list!

I used to have an excellent vocabulary. Now I often cannot think of the word I want to use. It is so frustrating to have people always feeling like they must finish my sentences.

My sweet husband fills in the words and finishes my sentences perfectly. Sometimes we carry on a conversation where I'll say 2-3 words then he says 2-3 and so on. Our whole conversation is done without an entire sentence being spoken.

I read somewhere (can't remember where

You are obviously not alone. I also used to be an avid reader. I can't concentrate long enough to read the many new books I have.

I guess we just have to learn to live with it, and try to keep our sense of humor.

Hugs to all,

Nini

Cathy - you do sudoku & crosswords - I am impressed!!!!!

A long time ago I made up my mind I don't care how words are spelled as long as the person reading what I write understands me. I grew up with a house full of 'perfectionists', school teachers and people who were 'bent on being RIGHT'.  I found I rather enjoyed not being perfect! I hit the wrong key here or misspell somthing....hy you all can figure out what I'm trying to say.....so, forgetting words, filling in 'cracker' that's great!, and not spelling them correctly....WHO CARES! the most important thing is we communicate. I'm loveing the private posts, by the way, and all the responses to my questions. Thanks ya all,

sarah

Wrte me I don't give a dang how you spell it!! Love ya, s

I can add another often overlooked source of memory issues.  It seems that a common OTC med many people take for both allergies and to help sleep at night can cause a "fog" like issue.  The medication is Benadryl (diphenhydramine).

I was really surprised to learn about that possibility from a med most of us think is really w/o side effects of any concern.  And apparently it is even more possible for folks as we get older.

It seems that somehow the Benadryl builds up in a person's system which causes memory problems, including things like short term memory loss, nominal aphasia, it can cause alzheimer's like agitated states as well as other issues often related to a failing memory.

But the good news is if you are taking it that if you stop the symptoms go away in pretty short order.

OMG i totally have short term memory loss. I can remember stupid, odd and random things from back in jr high and back but i cant remember to bring the darn movies back to Blockbuster Thats hilarious, CRACKER. Puts a whole new meaning into "polly want a cracker"
